Norefjell is a mountain ridge between the Hallingdal and Eggedal valleys. Due to its majestic appearance, it is considered the first real mountain range north of Oslo. It is said Høgevarde has the second-largest overview in southern Norway (after Gaustatoppen). From the top, you can see about 40 000 km2. From the peaks of Rondane to Jotunheimen, from the Glacier Hardangerjøkulen to Gaustatoppen, as seen on the panoramic orientation board above the supplied tourist cottage. Nowhere else south from the Arctic Circle such a huge area can be seen. Until 1858, the saddle under the summit was a meeting point for residents of the surrounding valleys in summer who sold horses, traded goods, drank alcohol and danced wildly on the occasion of Raudmyrdansen's celebration. In 1858, some participants were surprised by a snowstorm. The inscription on the stone monument from 1958 captures the names of the nine men and women who died here. The musician's corpse was not found before the fall. Pastor Jørg Moe, a collector of Norwegian folk tales, released an avid ceremony next Sunday in Olberg against the vicious “dance of death” and Raudmyrdansen was banned. Today it reappears again in the form of Halloween.
