It is located on the north side of Godøy island in the municipality of Giske in Møre og Romsdal county, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) northwest of Leitebakk.

The current lighthouse was built in 1876 and is still in operation with a few modifications.

The lighthouse was automated in 1982 and is now owned by the municipality of Giske. Part of our visitor guides trip to Alesund Norway. Illness lighthouse is at the very tip of a peninsula that takes about a 30 minute bus ride from Alesund town. It was a very windy and kind of gloomy cloudy rainy day when we visited. The lighthouse itself is a small about five story building, striped red and white looking out over the bay. They have great rocks on their beaches here and I would encourage you to go for a walk in the fields and look out over the water and imagine yourself living here as a Viking
