Hamar Town was established as a Town and trade center after a decision made by the Norwegian. Parliament in 1849 . Hamar or Hammer has an history going back to the Middle Ages or earlier . The Catholic Church in Rome had 5 administration power houses in Scandinavia during the Middle Ages .One of theme was Hamar where the Catholic Church built on of their power centers back in 1151 A.D , in form of a cathedral and a huge settlement . The ruins of the Cathedral , who was burned down by the Swedes in 1537 , The Reformation banned the Catholic Church and the Vatican lost its power and vast properties in Scandinavia . Today there is a museum. on the site . In addition the ruins from the old Cathedral are intact , covered with a special designed Glass House . A popular place for weddings Today . On the other side of Hamar Town there have been uncovered a settlement dating back to the Viking Age . Hamar Town became an important Town as a hub for train travellers . Where travellers to the Eastern part of Norway had to change trains . From Hamar Town both the eastern and the northern routes take you to Trondheim City . Read moreThis is the location of the original settlement of whay is today Hamar. Here are the location of the ruins of the dome church from the middle ages. Itnwas burnd by the sweeds in a war 4-500years ago. Some years ago, a large glass building was erected over the church ruins, to protect it from the constant errotion caused by weater. The surrounding area is a museum, with several traditional buildings, partially from the area originally, and some moved there from the region. It is a narural park and hasneven a beach and surrounding green area used by the locals and tourists innthe summer.
I will spessially mention that every spring, early June an Medeval Festival is held there. This is alot of fun, and is visited by alot of people every year. It is very family frendly, and recomanded for familys with children, but for all other ages as well. Something...

They have a great staff and you can see some of them walking in historical clothing which gives a nice touch in my opinion! Everything is behind glass for better preservation. Some items are even monitored with temperature and humidity meters.
Also, they have information flyers in multiple languages. They have Norwegian, English, German and even Dutch which was perfect for my father. (We are from the Netherlands)
