I noticed that there was a UNESCO site here, but really had no idea what it was all about. after a bit of research, it appears that the Struve Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, traversing 10 countries and over 2,820 km. These survey points were carried out from 1816-1855 by astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve. They represented the first accurate measuring of a long segment of a meridian which helped to establish the exact size and shape of the planet and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping. The 'monument' itself then is a placeholder for a survey point and represents this mathematical and engineering...
Read moreIt helps that we saw the monument on a beautiful, sunny summer's day. The Struve geodetic arc runs to the Black Sea and consists of triangulation points used in the 19th century to calculate the exact size and shape of the earth. The Hurtigruten currently docks very close by - while its usual terminus is being repaired. It is quite hard to find a walking route there through the docks but it is clearly visible from the top deck...
