Kvalvik Fort is located on the northeastern tip of Frei in Kristiansund municipality. The fort is one of the best preserved coastal forts of WWII , and describes an important part of our history through building masses, installations, signs and periodical exhibitions. The fort construction started in 1943 by Russian prisoners of war that lived in a camp nearby, but was not completed when the peace came in 1945 . The mission of the fort was to have control of the Omsundet and the entrance to Freifjorden and Vinjefjorden , and it was part of Festung Norwegen . In 1944 , there were 100 men as crew on the fort. The Fort area has been maintained by Frei municipality in collaboration with Kvalvik Forts Friends, the Friends Association is open to all interested. There is also a close collaboration with the Nordmøre Museum . At Kvalvik Fort there is, among other things, a Biber dwarf submarine , a 45 mm armor cannon and a 25 mm Hotchkiss air defense cannon on display.
