Yes it’s a detour from your touristy route, but it is the oldest stave church in the country! Unless you want to continue with the romantic drive on the church side of the fjord, leave the car at the parking lot from where ferry leaves, it will save you money and the hustle. On the other side it’s a quite steep uphill (about 1 km). Ticket include guided tour ( because it’s a destination for the cruise hoards, there were two groups and it was quite crowded, so I did not wait for the guided tour and just listened to the bus guide). It is not enough just to look at the church from outside. It is so interesting to sit on the bench inside and image how it was done centuries ago while listening to an interesting story.

Its a really nice place to stay for a while. The church is beautiful with huge carving work ob the outside. There are 5 parking spots in front of the property ( at the café) you should take a lil hike after you visit the church itself. Please be aware if you're getting there by car: the road ( probably 12-ish miles) along the river is really narrow. Sometimes, you have to back up for several 100-foot. ( advanced driving skills are recommended) besides that fact....10 outa 10

This church is wonderful! We'll worth a visit. The staff provided a nice talk about the history, and were happy to answer questions. It was not crowded when we were there off season, but high season can get quite busy. There is a very small ferry that holds 8-10 cars, or you can walk on. Beware, you have to back the car on to the ferry! If you choose to walk, it not far distance wise, but up a very tall hill. Maybe 20 minutes walking with a fairly big incline.

We were really surprised and loved our visit here. It’s a bit difficult and expensive to get there (110kr pp + 160 kr for the ferry - this is a van and 2 ppl), but definitely worth it if you have the time. Hearing the stories from the guide and being able to ask questions was the highlight of our visit, eventhough we normally never like guided tours. The church and its history is really interesting and it’s really nice that everything is told by a local.

Oldest stave church in Norway. A historic site in UNESCO list. Good walking ground to explore. Nice little gift shop at the end of the road offers some reading materials and souvenirs about the church. It is historic, more about when it was built and how it was maintained throughout the years. Wonderful piece of Norway history. A must see if you happen to be in the area. The ride to the church is very nice as well with the view of the fiorjd...

Absolutely gorgeous church with its wood carvings. The access to the churchyard and the church itself requires a ticket to a guided tour (130kfor an adult, but OK this includes the guide). The best carvings are on the external northern wall, but the interiors are lovely as well. The guides are very nice. The guided tours start every 30 min or so. There is a small parking space close to the church, or a much bigger place 700m away on the road.
