Gorgeous views but more exposure than we expected. For hikers used to exposure, this shouldn't be bad. For hikers not used to exposure or who have any fear of heights, this could be challenging and cause some panic.
There are 3-4 places on the hike where you need to take a step right next to the cliff sheer edge, including one where you need to pull yourself up onto the next shelf using a chain. One slip and you're toast. There's some other narrow sections on the ridge that aren't dangerous so much as scary/vertigo inducing. I would not do this on a rainy or windy day. An alternative is to do the Høgnosa route, or hike up to Mjølvafjellet which has the best views of the hike and then hike back to Åndalsnes.
For as touristy as the hike is becoming, adding another chained section and extending one of them will help reduce some exposure. That said, tens of people do this everyday and we met people doing it there-and-back twice in day or with dogs, and there are also races on it (which baffles me).
My travel partner and I are ~30 and have done our share of hikes, but I haven't done one with much exposure and I have a moderate fear of heights. My partner almost panicked at one chained section near the cliff edge and I felt more unsafe than I wanted at a couple of spots.
The hike itself has gorgeous and a good mix of views. It's challenging physically but doable. Take the gondola down at the end like others recommend, we're...
Read moreA stunning hike, one of our most enjoyable in our lifetime. The route is clearly marked with a red T or a red mark on a rock, you can’t miss it. We were fortune and got a lift to the start point, but a bus is available with early drop off times. The first 30 mins are reasonable ascent with easy footing, you then reach a steeper section which takes about 45 mins to ascend and would be considered a level 1/2 scramble in the UK. You then reach a plateau before crossing the ridge, with some exposing sections, which will be challenging for those who don’t have a head for heights. After this section it is flat the majority of the way across, before you reach Eggen restaurant and you can then either take the gondola down, or walk down (45 mins) passing the Rampestreken. Eggen restaurant welcomes walkers, despite also having a restaurant with very upspcale dining. We experienced every possible weather on this hike and by the time we reach the restaurant and the ramp it was shrouded in fog which meant there were no views (nothing more than 20ft ahead of you!), which was a shame, but a good demonstration of how quickly the weather can shift as we had glorious sunshine 20 mins before. Come prepared, trail or hiking shoes required. Bring water and food. Approx 7.7miles from start to finish (if you walk down rather than taking...
Read moreHiked Romsdaleseggen from Venjedalen to Romsdalsgondolen via Mjolvafjellet and Hogaksla (5.3 miles, 2747 ft gain). One of the most scenic routes I've hiked; sweeping landscape views nearly everywhere. Started at 0945 and arrived at upper gondola at 1700; though I consistently stopped to take pictures, there's always something to view.
I hiked at start of the Andalsnes off-season, where there is snow on the higher parts of the ridge. The bus that usually runs from the Andalsnes visitor center to Venjedalen (at 0830 or 0930) was not operating, so I called a private taxi. I completed the hike with no technical gear; only hiking boots, gloves, and multiple clothing layers. You will have to rock scramble (use hands and feet to climb), use chains anchored to the route, and follow the red trail spray paint to complete. Hiking poles would have been nice to test the snow; with the blanket snow coverage, it's hard to tell where flat surfaces are beneath the snow, I stepped in many holes and on precarious rocks.
This route was amazing; no boring areas, rocks scrambles were fun, views were spectacular, and a large section follows the ridgeline cliff edge (so you're constantly seeing the dramatic landscape). One of my favorite hikes. I think the views right as you summit Romsdaleseggen Ridge and until Mjolvafjellet...
