The advantage of making this hike instead of Segla is that you actually get to see Segla, the most iconic peak from Senja, fjords and surrounding mountains! This hike has the patterns that I have noticed in many hikes in Norway, it’s kind of short but very steep for the length, muddy and with a stretch of rocks where it’s necessary to leave your hiking poles behind and use your hands for some light climbing. I was in love with the views of those dramatic peaks and the sea water that comes and goes against its walls, and look at this lovely red vegetation covering the peaks in autumn! I recommend you to continue a bit further after you arrived though the path that goes ontem opposite direction of Segla, there you get to see part of the view that I described above.

After two days of rain and zero visibility while hiking and camping along the trails of the mountain peak Hesten in Senja, Norway, I was gifted with an incredible cloud inversion, and the majestic splendor of my surroundings finally revealed itself. I arrived at my campsite near the top of the peak at midnight and waited three hours for the sun to rise. With my tripod set up on the edge of a 1,500 foot cliff face, I ran into position to create a sense of scale for a photo as soon as I noticed fog beginning to drift in again. After 10 minutes, it had completely engulfed the upper reaches of Hesten, so I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to capture the moment of enchanting beauty depicted in the accompanying photo below.

Absolutely stunning place, but the trail is harder than some blogs on the web stated. I was hiking with two other people; we are young and fit, and we have done lots of hikes and some easy summits. The first part of the ascent was easy, and if you take the path that takes you to the right, once you arrive at the ridge, the views are awesome. The last 100 meters were the tricky part. It was more like climbing than walking. I think that most people stay on the ridge, and you get almost as good Segla photos as from the summit (check photos). You should really consider whether you want to go for the extra push.
