Sagastad Viking Center — Attraction in Stad

We arrived via cruise ship and a representative of the museum was handing out flyers. All aboard was 4:30 PM and my shore excursion finished at 3:25 PM. I hurried over there and made it by 3:35 PM. The doors were locked and the sign said they closed at 4:00 PM and last entry was 3:30 PM. As I was looking in through the glass front door two staff members exited the building by the side door and said they would let me in and I could have a quick look since I had practically run from the port and there were still staff in the building. His name was Jason and he told me I could reference him which I did. However, It was not convenient for the two young ladies at the register and another lady came to the desk did not seem happy either so I said it was no problem and apologized and left. I am still giving the museum a five star review. Why? Jason and his associate were helpful and kind and really wanted to allow me a quick look! They are an asset to this museum and ambassadors for their city. The architecture of the building is STUNNING and I did get to see the replica of the Viking ship from the entry and it looks fantastic as did the rest of the museum. If you are in the area, it is a 10 to 15 minute walk along the water from the cruise terminal and there is a big parking lot if you arrive by car. The ship reconstruction is the real interesting part, although one can't see the mast or how the rig works it's very nice to be able to get on board and experience how the different parts of the deck work. A fair amount of information about Vikings presented in an easy to access and quite modern and original way. Complete lack of original artifacts. In other words, besides the ship itself (that would be much better off floating on the water) this museum is all about text, animations and most is left to the imagination. Especially bad is the gift shop, selling the cheapest quality, tacky souvenirs (lots of them made in China) at in my opinion exaggerated prices. Eine „Attraktion“, die man sich durchaus sparen kann. Die gesamte Ausstellung ähnelte einem überdachten Spielplatz für Eltern mit Kindern. Wer eine Aufbereitung des Schiffsfundes in ähnlicher Form wie die Vasa in Stockholm erwartet, ist hier am anderen Ende der Skala. Schade. Unsere Erfahrung am 15.8.2023: Online erworbene Tickets wurden nicht kontrolliert. Wer sich in der Schlange anstellte, musste bezahlen. Ging man einfach vorbei, standen alle Zugänge offen. Das kleine Gebäude war rappelvoll. Es lag ein (!) Kreuzfahrtschiff im Hafen. Wenn überhaupt, sollte man wohl hierher kommen, wenn nichts los ist. Der AudioGuide wird als WebApp kostenfrei angeboten. Unbedingt Kopfhörer, am besten mit NoiseCancellation mitbringen. Es ist alles sehr eng und auch bei wenigen Besuchern steht man sich ständig im Weg. Viel Text, viel Erklärung, aber kaum Exponate. Das Schiff war in der Hand von Kindern mit ihren Eltern. Es wurde alles bewegt, was beweglich ist. Auch im Schiffsboden krabbelten die Kinder, dank der Hilfe der Eltern, die Bodenplatten hochhoben und ihre Kinder dort fröhlich spielen ließen. Der Raum für die Filmvorführung ist mehr als klein. Für den typischen Ansturm der Touristen sollte wohl der Film entweder massiv kürzer oder der Raum größer sein. Die VR-Präsentation in den zwei Kabinen ist eher sinnfrei. Eine Kabine war zudem außer Betrieb. Die „VR-Experience“ besteht im Grunde aus Bogenschiessen vom Boot auf einen herumlaufenden Schildträger. Dieser ist aber auch bei maximaler Bogenspannung kaum zu treffen. Ein Erkunden der Umgebung? Fehlanzeige. Die Toiletten waren sauber. Das Café nun ja. Wartehalle beschreibt es ganz gut.
