Thủ đô của cực quang Located at 69° North in the heart of Arctic Norway, Tromsø is often called the “Capital of the Northern Lights” – and for good reason. Thanks to its prime position directly beneath the auroral oval, Tromsø offers some of the highest chances in the world to witness the aurora borealis, especially during the winter months from September to March.

But Tromsø is more than just a destination for aurora hunting. This charming Arctic town is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, deep fjords, and cozy wooden houses, creating a fairytale-like landscape that’s both peaceful and awe-inspiring. During polar nights in winter, when the sun doesn’t rise for weeks, the sky comes alive with vibrant ribbons of green, violet, and red lights dancing above.

Visitors can enjoy a range of unforgettable experiences, from guided aurora chases and husky sledding, to ice fishing and learning about the indigenous Sámi culture. What makes Tromsø truly special is that it combines raw Arctic beauty with modern comfort—offering good infrastructure, warm accommodations, and reliable tours, making it ideal even for first-time winter travelers.

Whether you're a photographer, adventurer, or simply a dreamer chasing magic in the sky, Tromsø is one of the most reliable and enchanting places in the world to see the...

You don’t need to join an expensive tour — you can see amazing northern lights right here!

I’m a budget backpacker traveling around the world, and I researched several aurora spots in Tromsø to find places I could reach on my own. Among all the spots I visited, this was the easiest to access, had the least light pollution, and offered the clearest view.

From around 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the aurora danced across the night sky — unbelievably large, bright, and beautiful. You can even see green, white, and pink colors with the naked eye.

There are metal barrels placed here and there where you can make a bonfire. It gets really cold at night, so bringing a lighter might be helpful.

One night I went when it was very windy by the seaside — sand blew into my eyes and it hurt, so be careful on windy days!

I’m sure aurora tours are amazing too, but if the sky is clear, you can have an incredible experience right here for free.

I’ll be sharing the experience on YouTube and social media, so feel free to check it out if you’re curious!...

Free spot to catch the northern lights! We were introduced to this place by our Airbnb host and we loved it! While referring the auroras apps, we got there at the best timing and got to see the beautiful lights across the sky. It is easy to get to the beach by taking buses from the city centre.

Do take note that the pathway into the beach is rather dark (use your phone torch) but there are many other families and people, so it feels really safe. It is also a little colder as it is facing the sea so make sure to...
