I was looking forward to traversing this canyon for quote some time but couldn't do it because of Covid restrictions on entering Oman. As soon as Oman reopened her borders, I decided to take my group of outdoor enthusiasts to the canyon.
We camped at the grounds of a local guide and in the morning after breakfast, our guide took us to the end of the canyon to park our cars. We returned in his cars to his house. The walk to the start of the canyon was around 15 mins long.
The canyon starts by a few hundred meters walk, after which you need to use ropes to go down. Make sure to use professionals who know what they are doing. You don't need any training to get down, but definitely need abseiling equipment and safety helmets.
Hence started our wonderful 6 hours adventure through this magical canyon which Included using ropes to go down some gorges 3 times, plenty of natural water pools, a beautiful cave, pool jumping and walking. This is unlike I have ever experienced in my life and all had the most amazing time. I wish I could give a dozen stars to this experience.
If you have the opportunity, go for it without thinking twice. You will have the best time and will cherish this experience for the rest of your lives.
Just a few words of caution. You can't be someone who has little to no experience of physical activities, this experience is not for children or pets, you need to be able to swim or else you will need to be provided with a life jacket, you will need to put your shades in the car as I have lost mine during this experience, make sure to carry a waterproof bag or else keep your electronics in the car.
Overall, there is nothing like this experience in...
Read moreIt’s incredibly frustrating reading different accounts of where “Snake Canyon” and “Little Snake Canyon” are, and how difficult they are to tackle, so I will try to make it clear what to expect here:
This is the correct location for the start of a shorter (circa 2 hours) but ONE WAY route down the canyon. Unless you set and leave ropes, you will not be able to return: expect to make several jumps and slides into plunge pools, whose depths will vary depending on recent rainfall. We chanced upon another group with a leader who’s done this route 4 times, so was able to set the ropes and advise on water depth.
If you’ve read about a round trip route down Snake Canyon, this is not the place to find it. We were told it exists - it may be the spot marked as Little Snake Canyon on google maps.
The course isn’t particularly demanding in terms of fitness, but you will need to be comfortable scrambling over boulders (often slippery), jumping into water from a height, and swimming. You will be completely submerged at points, so be prepared to get wet.
If you’re up for it, it’s an incredible experience. Tried and tested, but certainly feels a world away from the tourist trail. Scrambling through the gorge is quite epic - just...
Read moreAbsolutely a thrill and it was one of our best activities in Oman. If you are looking at this, you have found a must for your list of adventures.
We were 2 families incl. kids between 11-13 years old.
We booked a private tour with Wadi Adventures (I highly recommend them). They were 5 guides for the 7 of us. So they took extra care for us. (You cannot do this without a company.)
You will need wetsuits and good water shoes for this trip. A good idea would be knee protectors too. Water is cold and the rocks are slippery. All the rest will be provided by the tour company.
A tour is amazing, thrilling and you will remember forever. There are 3 areas where you will use ropes to descend, and 3 places for jumping into the water. At some sections, you will need to swim. You will get a lifejacket as well to help on that.
I would not recommend this for people out of shape, above 70 years old, no pregnant women, very small kids. It is called a “medium” difficulty canyoning tour, but for normal people I would call it “challenging”.
And again, this is a very unique and...
