This is an actual palace belonging to the royal family of Bahawalpur state. This has been taken over by Pakistan Army and they have maintained it extremely well. The palace is open to visitors and they also run short documentaries on a large screen explaining the history of the palace on the ground floor. There is a huge lawn which is also used as site for professional photo shoots. The first floor has been converted into guest rooms that can be booked only by serving members of the armed forces, who can also book it for their civilian family and friends. The room rate is 8 thousand rupees per night and requires upfront payment. However, the guest rooms are difficult to stay in during summer months due to the large size and smaller air conditioners in the room. The electrical sockets are very old style hence not possible to charge any device. There is one large bedroom with a bed and sofa, the dressing room has a very old large closet and a refrigerator but no air conditioning. The bathroom is also very spacious but fittings are very old. Moreover, there is no WiFi and cellular signals from all major companies do not work inside the palace. The staff are really very humble and helpful and put efforts to make your stay comfortable.

Gulzar Mahal is one of the finest examples of Bahawalpur’s royal heritage. Stepping inside feels like entering a miniature Buckingham Palace — the interiors are breathtaking and reflect the immense wealth and grandeur of the Bahawalpur state. Visiting this palace is not just about architecture, but also about history. It reminds you that, around the time Pakistan was struggling for survival after independence, Bahawalpur was one of the richest princely states, contributing its resources generously to the new nation. The palace’s interior stands as living evidence of that richness, culture, and royal lifestyle. The grandeur of Gulzar Mahal truly reflects the lifestyle of Bahawalpur’s rulers, comparable to the greatest empires in history. If you are ever in Bahawalpur and want to experience the luxurious lives of the kings of this princely state, Gulzar Mahal is a must-visit.

Gulzar Mahal was built between 1906 and 1909. It was commissioned during the reign of Sadeq Mohammad Khan V,and was built to be the residence for women members of the royal household of the former Princely State of Bwp, aside from the Queen. The palace is surrounded by a large garden, and is located in the Bahawalgarh Palace Complex in close proximity to the palaces of Darbar Mahal, Farrukh Mahal, and Nishat Mahal. This beautiful palace was named after the wife of the Nawab Bahawal Khan V.
