The Chitral Fort is a fortification in Chitral town, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The fort is situated on the banks of the Chitral River. The fort has a commanding position on the river and is believed to have been built by Raja Nadir Shah in the 14th Century. It was restored in 1774 during the reign of Shah Afzal II and again in 1911 by His Highness Sir Shuja ul-Mulk . The compound used to house the barracks of the guards of Mehtar of Chitral as well as his immediate family.

The fort was declared as the personal property of the last ruler of Chitral following the merger of Chitral State in 1969. It is now occupied by the current ceremonial Mehtar, Fateh-ul-Mulk Ali Nasir who has renovated the old Darbar Hall and state rooms following damage sustained during the...

Old residential building of the Nawab of Chitral, also known as Mehtar’s Palace or Mehtar’s Fort. The building was in use by the nawab during his era before and after the partition and still owned by his descendants. It’s is a private property, not public as such but made available to public if requested.

It is one of the main attractions for the public visiting Chitral. The fort is beautifully built on the bank of River Chitral (extension of River Kunhar). The walls are fortified and protected by Cannon guns that are still laying there for display. This part is usually easily accessible to public.

The residential building is adjacent to it but not available openly to public. One needs high contacts in army or local government...

Chitral fort is royal seat and still in possession of the royal family of Chitral and head is called Mehtar or chief. The fort is unique in the architecture and is located on the bank of the River Chitral also called Kunar and when enters into Afghanistan is called the River Kabul. The fort is not opened for public however on request some portions of the fort can be visited. The current Mehtar Fateh-ul-Mulk Ali Nasir is well versed and vigilant personality and used to write pieces on history. This was the same fort which besieged by Umra Khan of Jandol in the last decade of the 19th century and later the British helped the Mehtar and that military activity in history is called...

It's a beautiful fort, but quite neglected. This structure can become the biggest tourist attraction of the city and area but unfortunately haven't been preserved well. I'd suggest handing it over to serena or Pc to turn it into a hotel, for at least they'll preserve it. My suggestion might seem lunatic but this structure deserves to be praised and preserved well. The front gate was closed, so i had to go from the back side, and thanks to Chacha Sher Ali, who allowed me to visit this place. While I was leaving, I was forced by my photographic urge to take a picture of chachu and Wallah he's so photogenic. To cut short, Chitral Fort should be restored to up to its full grandeur and royalty.
