Amburiq Mosque — Attraction in Gilgit-Baltistan

Hidden in the breathtaking landscapes of Shigar Valley, the Amburiq Mosque is the oldest mosque in the region and a symbol of Baltistan’s deep-rooted Islamic heritage. Built in the 14th century by craftsmen from Kashmir and Persia, its distinct wooden architecture, intricate carvings, and Tibetan-style roof showcase the unique blend of influences that shaped this land. Baltistan itself is a cultural mosaic, where Balti—a language with Tibetan roots—is spoken alongside more than 12 other languages found across Gilgit-Baltistan.

Reaching Amburiq was never part of our plan. We were supposed to head to Hunza, but landslides had blocked the road. Forced to change our route, we ended up in Shigar, where this historic mosque stood as an unexpected discovery. Travel often reminds us that what seems like bad luck is sometimes just a different path to something remarkable.

শিগার উপত্যকার এক ছোট গ্রামের মনোমুগ্ধকর প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যের মাঝে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে আম্বুরিক মসজিদ। এখানকার প্রথম ইসলামিক উপাসনালয়, যা বালতিস্তানের ইসলামের প্রাচীন ইতিহাসের এক প্রতীক। ১৪শ শতকে কাশ্মীর ও পারস্যের কারিগররা এটি নির্মাণ করেন, যার কাঠের স্থাপত্যশৈলী, সূক্ষ্ম খোদাই করা নকশা এবং তিব্বতীয় ঘরানার ছাদ এই অঞ্চলের বৈচিত্র্যময় সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্যের পরিচয় বহন করে। বালতিস্তান নিজেই একটি ভাষার মেলবন্ধন, যেখানে তিব্বতি শিকড়সম্পন্ন বালতি ভাষা ছাড়াও পুরো গিলগিত-বালতিস্তান জুড়ে ১২টিরও বেশি ভাষা প্রচলিত।

আমাদের এখানে আসার কথাই ছিলনা। মূলত হুনজার পথে যাত্রা করেছিলাম, কিন্তু ভূমিধসের কারণে রাস্তা বন্ধ তাই দিক পরিবর্তন করি। সেই পথবদলের ফলেই আমরা এসে পৌঁছাই শিগারে, যেখানে ইতিহাসের এক অনন্য সাক্ষী হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে এই প্রাচীন মসজিদ। ভ্রমণ বারবার শেখায়—সব কিছু আমাদের পরিকল্পনা অনুযায়ী চলে না। কখনো কখনো প্রতিকূলতা আমাদের এমন দরজার সামনে নিয়ে আসে, যার অস্তিত্বই হয়তো আগে জানা ছিল না। প্রকৃতির মাঝে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা এই ঐতিহাসিক কাঠের মসজিদ, এর চারপাশে শিগারের সৌন্দর্য, এবং বালতিস্তানের সমৃদ্ধ সংস্কৃতির ছোঁয়া—সব মিলিয়ে এটি এক অবিস্মরণীয় অভিজ্ঞতা হয়ে রইল।
