Inaugural ceremony of the Winter Sports Festival was held today at Khalti Frozen Lake, in Ghizer District. Around 110 athletes will compete in events in Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, Ice Football etc. Music and dance are also part of the 3-day festival during which stalls of local cuisines and handicrafts are also being set up. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Deputy Speaker Nazeer Ahmed as a chief guest along with Tourism Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan, and other Govt officials. Large number of people were present to witness the inaugural session. The event is organised by Tourism and Culture Department Gilgit Baltistan and Khalti Social Development Organization - KSDO. It is pertinent to note that the ice-hockey and skating events are held on top of a lake that freezes during the winter. Photos by Hi-Rays Productions.

Khalti Lake is located around 6 km from Gupis on Gilgit-Chitral Road. Basically it is Gilgit River that widens up and deepens considerably in the area of Khalti village and then again squeezes to a normal width ahead of PTDC motel. The lake has emerald blue water and is known for housing good sized trout. It is approachable from many places near the main road. On just needs to stop the vehicle on the roadside and go down a bit. There are a few restaurant in the area where one can sit and enjoy lake views. If you are an angler, there are opportunities for catching brown trout which is in abundance in this lake. Do get a fishing license from Gupis… It takes around 3 to 3.5 hours to reach the lake from Gilgit. A must visit place in Gizer Valley

It is situated in gupis yasin district. This lake is an important source of fresh water and has a stock of trout 🐟 A PTDC motel is situated nearby with a view of the lake. The water is extremely cold which flows directly from surrounding glaciers. The lake usually freezes in winter season and people can easily walk on it. Locals have icy hockey 🏒 tournaments in winter. I spoke to local children there. And it was surprising for me when a girl told me that they have 3 doctors in their village and she also wanna become doctor then she will move to karachi. Khalti village illiteracy rate is 70% which is the highest in surrounding area. It was very difficult to get there because of snow ❄️ on road, and it became icey. This lake is on gilgit shandur road and due to heavy traffic and icey road, we had very slow journey. It took us around 4 hrs to get there. I have traveled on this road back in 2015 from shandur pass to gilgit in summer, road wasn't good enough back than. Because of heavy snow ❄️ and traffic it need continuous...

Gupis-Yasin District, in the westernmost part of Gilgit-Baltistan and beautiful Pakistan’s northernmost territory is home to Khalti Lake. The lake is located near the village of Khalti in a bend of the Ghizer River.

A PTDC motel with a view of the lake is nearby. The water is very cold, flowing directly from the surrounding glaciers. Over the winter, the lake normally freezes and people can walk on it easily.

The upper portion of Khalti Lake has become an ice sheath due to the freezing temperatures in Gilgit-Baltistan. The lake is said to be 30 to 70 feet deep at 7,000 feet above sea level. It is about 120 kilometers from Gilgit, in the Gupis Valley of Ghizer district.
