太平洋戦争で日米が激戦を繰り広げたペリリュー島に日本の厚生労働省が建立したペリリュー平和記念公園があります。天皇陛下も訪問されています。碑文は「さきの大戦において西太平洋の諸島及び海域で戦没した人々をしのび平和への思いをこめてこの碑を建立する」とあり、碑が日本の方向を向いていて、また日本の戦没者の魂が迷わないようにと、日本の方向を示した矢印が付けられています。厚生労働省では2025年時点でペリリュー島に眠る日本人戦没者の遺骨収集体制を強化して、一体でも多くの方々の帰国が叶うよう対応しているそうです。
