The Panchamukhi Anjaneya Swamy (Panchamukhi) is in the cave where it’s believed that in 16th century Sri Raghavendra Swamiji did meditation for 12 years after which Lord Hanuman appeared with 5 faces (hence the name Panchamukhi) i.e of Hanuman, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha & Hayagriva. The idol that’s available in the cave is believed to be self-manifested. Blessing Sri Swamiji, Lord Hanuman proclaimed that "he would move around the places solving the problems and fulfilling the desires of ‘bhaktas’ while spreading the message that only ‘Sri Hari’ is the ultimate God; and he will ultimately achieve salvation by becoming ‘live Samadhi (Brindavan)’ at the present place of Manthralayam". At Panchamukhi, even Sri Mahalakshmi appeared to Sri Swamiji and this Devi is known locally as ‘Erakalamma’ for whom there is a temple very close to and behind Panchamukhi temple and it’s worth paying a visit to this place. Even today, the descendants of original priest Sri Ananthachar in 16th century, are performing the puja at both Panchamukhi and Erakalamma temples. That’s how the importance for this place is very high among the devotees of Sri Swamiji. Even landscape around the temple area, where boulders are standing one above the other in quite a peculiar way, is very nice to look at. Even if this place is not part of your tour package, it is better to consider it, convince the tour operator to cover this holy place as well and pay a visit to both Panchamukhi and Erakalamma temples. Road condition is bad to this place and no good restaurants are available for which the local Government/ Authorities should consider improving the situaton. Share Autos are available from Manthralayam to this place and they charge Rs. 100 per person for a round trip.

It is believed that Guru Raghavendra did penance here for Panchamukhi Anjaneya for 12 years. The Impressed Lord Anjaneya appeared before Raghavendra Swamy with Panchamukha namely Varaha, Garuda, Narasimha, Hayagreeva and Anjaneya. It is after Lord Anjaneya Darshan that Sri Raghavendra entered Jeeva Samadhi. It is said that Kolhapur Mahalakshmi, Lord Venkateswara, Lord Vishnu in Kurmavathar offered darshan to Sri Guru Raghavendra. As per the Legend, during Tretayuga, Anjaneya visited this place while rescuing Rama and Lakshmana from Mahiravana. It is believed that Anjaneya entered the cave near Erukalamba temple to reach Mahiravana. There is footwear outside the temple which is believed to be of Lord Anjaneya. The temple will be crowded on special days such as Hanuman Jayanthi, Tuesdays, Sundays, No moon day and Pournami day. The huge rock structures near the temple were used by Lord Anjaneya as the Bed and Pillow during his stay. It is believed that Lord Anjaneya self-manifested here on the request of Sri Raghavendra Swamy. Lord can be seen in a unique posture sitting on his knees facing east and folded hands. It is said that worshipping Hanuman here will be blessed with good fortune and will be relieved from fear and sorrow. This temple is located on the banks of River Tungabhadra and is 19 km from Mantralayam.

According to Hanumath Prakaranam in Sri Vidyarnavatantram, Anjaneya has five faces (Pancha Mukha) and ten weapons. He uses all of them, against Mahiravana. Later, he frees Makaradhwaja and on the advice of Rama, crown him king of Patala. Another reason why this place is holy is that Raghavendra Swamy sat in meditation here for 12 years and he had the darshan of several Gods. Hanuman appeared as the panchamukhi before Raghavendra Swamy here amalgamating within himself the avatars of Varaha, Garuda, Anjaneya, Narasimha and Hayagreeva. The Srinivasa of Tirupathi, his consort the Mahalakshmi of Kolhapur and the Kurma Avatar of Vishu appeared before Raghavendra in the cave where the idol of Panchamukhi Hanuman is located. This idol is supposed to be very powerful and it gives devotes whatever they ask. As per the Puranas, The east facing Anjaneya grants Ishta Siddhi, south facing Narasimha gives Abhista Siddhi, west facing Garuda grants sakala sowbhagya, north facing Mah Lakshmi provides dhana or wealth and Hayagriva grants Sarvavidya.. It is only after Raghavendra Swamy had the darshan of these Gods and Anjaneya that he left for Mantralaya and entered Brindavana there in 1671. The temple is open from 7 a.m., to 8 p.m. Gandhal is just 20 kms from Mantralaya.

Panchamukhi Anjaneya Swamy Temple isn't located in Mantralayam itself, it holds a significant connection to the town and is a popular pilgrimage destination for devotees visiting Mantralayam. Situated roughly 20 kilometers away across the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, this temple boasts a unique history and spiritual significance. Legend associates the Panchamukhi Anjaneya Temple with Raghavendra Swamy himself. It's believed that before settling in Mantralayam, Raghavendra Swamy undertook a long period of meditation at this very spot. After his 12 years of meditation, it is said that four deities appeared before him: Panchamukha Anjaneya (five-faced Hanuman), Kolhapur Mahalakshmi, Lord Venkateswara, and Lord Vishnu as Varaha. The temple itself is a sight to behold. Perched atop a hillock, it offers stunning views of the surrounding valley. The most revered element here is the colossal idol of Lord Hanuman, believed to be self-incarnated on a massive rock. This idol depicts Hanuman with five faces, symbolizing his immense strength and the power to vanquish negativity in all its forms. The Panchamukhi Anjaneya Temple attracts large crowds during special occasions, particularly Hanuman Jayanti.

A well maintained temple. The temple is on a hill top and might probably have some 60 odd steps. The main deity is inside a small cave. It is believed that Sri Raghavendra Swamy did meditation and performed puja to the Panchamukhi (5 faced) Anjaneya. The Anjaneya has faces of Varaha and Garuda on his right and Narasimha and Hayagriva on the left. The main idol is small and carved on a rock stone and hardly can you identify the parts unless the priest over their explains. One should first take namaskaram from the feet of Hanuman which is half way to the hill and then have blessings of Anjaneya. There is also a huge slipper for Anjaneya which they make new ones every 5 years. After getting down the hill, while going round the hill, there is Vimanapura from where Anjaneya used to take off and there is a rock bed where Anjaneya used to sleep and relax it seems. A further behind with around 3 minutes walk is another cave and Goddess Lakshmi seems to have emerged from the stone inside the cave. A small 3 feet idol. There are plenty of shops around with pooja items and eatables.

Spiritually Powerful and Serene – A Must-Visit Temple The Panchamukhi Anjaneya Temple, located a short drive from Mantralaya, is a spiritually charged and deeply divine place. Believed to be where Lord Hanuman revealed his five-faced (Panchamukhi) form, this temple is surrounded by natural rock formations and peaceful silence — making the entire experience mystical and unforgettable. The temple stands on a small hill, and as you climb up, you feel a sense of calm and surrender. The deity of Panchamukha Anjaneya is carved into a rock and exudes immense power and grace. Just standing there in silence fills your heart with strength and devotion. The surrounding area is clean, and though the temple is in a remote place, it's well maintained. The scenic view, peaceful vibes, and divine energy make it a perfect stop for anyone visiting Mantralaya. Highly recommended for those seeking inner strength, peace, and blessings from Lord Hanuman. One of the most spiritually fulfilling experiences I've had.
