The Santa Cruz Trek through the Cordillera Blanca in the Huascarain National Park is one of the most beautiful I've ever hiked!! There are wild horses, glacial lakes, and beautiful views including that of the tallest mountain within the Tropics - Huascaran! We split our gear for the 4 day trek between 4 people, carried canned meat and quinoa, a small pot for boiling water, as well as iodine tablets for the water in our canteens, 2 small tents, and mats. You definitely need sunscreen for the elevation to be so near the sun and chapstick with SPF, I blistered the back of my hands and face/lips.I highly recommend being in your sleeping bag in your tent by sundown as it drops to freezing. Also, VERY IMPORTANT, sleep with your gear and shoes inside your tent, under your head or near you. People will come into your camp at night and take anything that is easily visible or too near your tent entrance! Overall, an amazing journey though and would absolute recommend! There are several tour groups in Huaraz, but you can do it on your own as a group if you're experienced, no problem. They rent gear out in town and you catch a bus up into the mountains early in...

2022.08.20 0500 PET-RMN update: Visited on Wednesday 2022.08.17. It was very beautiful. We went to the twin lakes of Chinaconcho and Orconcocha, which were amazing. The turquoise color of the water, particularly for Chinaconcho, is unworldly! We took the short row boat ride around the lake, which was very peaceful and enjoyable. The lakes are flanked by Mount Huascarán on the right (6,768 meters/22,205 feet above sea level - the tallest mountain in Peru) and Mount Huandoy on the left (6,395 meters/20,981 feet above sea level).
There were not too many people there as we visited it mid-week, mid-day. The weather was perfect, about 70 degrees farenheit, however be aware that temperatures drop into the 30s farenheit at night. They have bathrooms there but they charge 1 sol to use it and the men's room did not have any toilet seats (all typical in Peru). It is about an 8-9 hour drive from Lima, about 2-3 hour drive...
