Trail starts up the dirt road off the Caratera Central on up hill side of big switchback at Rio Blanco 5-6 km up from San Mateo de Huanchor. After about 1 km of road, keep left on trail that continues up the river valley, cross river and keep straight in another km or so. After a steeper stretch valley opens up. This is where Carlos (age 90) lives at over 4000 m elevation taking care of his sheep and llamas. He is very friendly, but, his dogs sense your arrival about 500m away and come up barking. It is best to stop and only advance slowly if they run back up the valley. Carlos will appear, calm the dogs, engage in conversation and expect 2 Soles per person to pass through his property on the way to the lake. He maintains the trail and clears away litter. The trail to lake goes up right side valley toward rock wall, passed on trail going up its right side, the last climb before the lake. Carlos likes canned tuna, carry some up if the 1000m elevation gain and 13.2 km round trip is not too much.

No te desvíes
