At 5200m (17600 ft) high, Rainbow Mountain should not be underestimated. What sounds like a easy/moderate hike with gradual inclination (steep towards the end) can turn into quite a challenge because of the altitude. My best advice is to walk slowly and drink water. Staying hydrated is vitally important. Remember, Rainbow Mountain is higher than the highest point on the Inca Trail. People get altitude sickness at this altitude so take it very easy. If you need to, maybe even take medication called diamox to help with the altitude.

Reaching Rainbow Mountain is totally worth it. The surrounding mountains of snow and ice capped peaks are a welcoming surprise before you reach the summit of Rainbow mountain. With that said, it's cold at the summit. Bring gloves with you.

Rainbow mountain is an extremely popular tourist attraction so be prepared to see tons of people which could make it challenging to take pictures. My advice, go to the top of rainbow mountain near the Vinicunca sign and take a picture facing rainbow mountain.

There are also locals here with alpacas that you can take pictures with.

You can even get your passport stamped with a vinicunca logo

You're also going to see a lot of llamas and alpacas grazing in the fields on your way to rainbow mountain.

Toilets cost 1 sol but bring your own toilet paper.

Rainbow mountain might be one of the most unique mountains you'll ever see because of it's shift in colors due to the different minerals found in the mountain like copper and iron.

Also, don't be fooled by certain pictures uploaded online. Rainbow mountain is not this extremely vibrant mountain bursting with color.

If you can't make it to the summit some of the locals offer horseback rides as close as possible to the summit but it's a lot more rewarding to actually hike.

You can also sometimes find a bird called Cara Cara flying around.

If you're in Peru, this should definitely be on...

The pictures online are NOT like what it looks like in person. It is much more muted and online pictures have the saturation all the way up. That being said, it is still a beautiful place to visit! Some considerations: it is a moderatly difficult hike due to the high altitude. Even if you are used to the altitudes in Cusco, this is quite a bit higher at 17,100 ft above sea level compared to Cusco which is at 11,100 ft. BRING ALTITUDE MEDICINE OR COCA. Even if your tour guide advertises it, you likely won't see them once you arrive at the mountain warning if you have motion sickness, the bus ride is ~3 hrs and is very windy and bumpy. Bring motion sickness pills. My boyfriend got very ill on the bus you can rent a horse to cover most of the walking portion. The horse does not go up for the ascent of the mountain which arguably is the hardest part. That being said, I got it and it was still nice to get the base of the mountain faster and more easily. if you do rent a horse, there will be a guide who will hold on to and pull the horse along for you. They are NOT tour guides. Their goal is to get you to the drop off point as soon as possible so they can get more riders. My guides would not stop to let me take photos or use the bathroom. Additionally, my guide on the way up kept running with the horse which made it much bumpier and not as enjoyable. It was (cash only) 60 soles up and then 40 soles on the way back. it gets cold. The weather can go from icy cold to pretty warm quickly due to the frosty, high winds, especially near the peak. For reference there was snow and near the peak it was probably only about 20F but near the bottom it felt closer to 40F with really bright sun. I would bring something to protect your ears from the cold and sunglasses. Also wear light layers (t-shirt, sweater,...

I recently had the privilege of visiting Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, and words cannot express the awe-inspiring beauty that awaits adventurers at this natural wonder. From the moment I set foot on the trail, I knew I was in for a treat.

The trek to Vinicunca is challenging but immensely rewarding. The journey takes you through diverse landscapes, from quaint villages to rugged terrains, offering a glimpse into the local Peruvian culture. The vibrant traditional dress of the indigenous people adds a colorful touch to the experience.

Upon reaching the summit, the breathtaking view of the Rainbow Mountain is nothing short of magical. The vivid hues of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue create a mesmerizing natural tapestry, reminiscent of an artist's palette. The contrasting colors are a testament to the geological forces that have shaped this unique mountain over millennia.

The photo opportunities are endless, and every angle offers a different perspective of the surreal landscape. Be sure to bring a good camera to capture the kaleidoscope of colors, as well as the panoramic views of the surrounding Andean peaks.

While the altitude can be challenging, especially for those not acclimated to high elevations, the guides are knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring the well-being of all visitors. It's advisable to take your time ascending to allow your body to acclimate and fully appreciate the stunning scenery.

I highly recommend Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain to nature enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone seeking a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It's a trek that challenges your body and rewards your soul with an indelible connection to the beauty of the Andean highlands. This is more than a destination; it's a journey into nature's own...
