I recently took a walking tour through the marsh at Pátanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge and had a wonderful time.
The tour guide was knowledgeable about the wildlife, including native species, non-native but naturalized species, and migratory birds. She was friendly and made the tour enjoyable.
The refuge offers tours in Spanish and English, and both seem to be well-received by visitors. As a bilingual speaker, I opted for the Spanish language tour, but I noticed another group taking an English birdwatching tour and they were equally happy with their guide.
After the tour, the guide passed around a helpful guidebook on the native birds of the refuge. The on-site snack bar was a welcome stop for refreshments after spending time in the morning sun.
To top it all off, I enjoyed a short and affordable boat ride for just 7 soles at the end, which was a perfect way to conclude the morning.
Overall, Pátanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge offers a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. I highly...
Read moreThis is a marsh that was created to be a wildlife refuge. It's easier to get a taxi to here, because with public transportation you have to take two buses and then walk for about half a mile. Currently in April 2024 the entry fee for Peruvians is 10 soles but 30 soles for foreigners. It certainly doesn't make you feel welcome when you are asked to pay three times what a Peruvian would pay. For me, the entry fee is too much for what you get. On one side of the property they have a catamaran ride for an extra cost and it has a circuitous route through the water. On the other side of the property is a walking trail and a lookout tower. The only place I really saw wildlife was some birds on the catamaran ride. Otherwise, animals avoid humans as always. Overall, for foreign tourists that have to pay triple, I wouldn't recommend this attraction. For Peruvians I would recommend going and paying the extra fee for the...

I was impressed by the quietness of the catamarán, and loved the peaceful ride around the lagoon. Overall a great place for lovers of flora, fauna, and...
