Just as you're engulfed in the tropical rainforest on your way to Machu Picchu, you'll see another clearing on a steep mountainside in the distance. As you get closer, you'll see it's an ancient Inca settlement, Wiñay Wayna to be precise. The excellent structural condition of the building walls and terraces is a testament to the Inca's immense skill. On the short Inca Trail, you'll stop here for lunch. A more beautiful location is hard to imagine.

Wiñay Wayna (Quechua for "forever young") was named by Andean scholar Julio C. Tello in 1942 after the orchid (Epidendrum secundum) found in the area between Machu Picchu and Wiñay Wayna. It is a well-preserved Inca archaeological site with upper and lower agricultural terraces and urban sectors located along the Inca Trail approximately 5 miles (8 km) from Machu Picchu, serving as a tambo for Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui on his way from Cusco.

Impressive site close to Machu Picchu. If you're doing the 4 day Inca Trail you'll camp very close to this site on the last night. The many terraces were likely used to experiment with different crops, gradually accclimatising them to lower altitudes. There's a large building at the top which was likely a religious or ceremonial place. Really impressive ruin and well worth your time to explore!

Nearly the best Inca site in this area. 10-15 minutes easy walk from camp site with small undulate.

This place offers a little of everything you can expect from an Inca site: temples uphill, numbers of terraces with concave shape, and residential areas with multiple floors. Not many people here and the Mountain View behind it is fantastic.

Third day afternoon on Inca trail should be a resting day, adding this site to schedule is a sure thing and recommended when you...
