Archaeological Site of Cahuachi — Attraction in Nazca

So many people come to Nasca for 4 hours to get in a plane and see the lines, but Cahuachi is one of a number of fascinating places to check out. There are dozens of Nazca pyramids hidden in sand, but the excavation and restoration of 3 have begun and it's a sight to see. This was a spot of ceremonial and spiritual significance, and scores of artifacts (including trophy heads) have been found here. Thousands of tombs surround the site, unfortunately all of them were destroyed by looters some 70 years ago, but the mystique remains. Cahuachi es el centro ceremonial más grande conocido con 24 quilómetros cuadrados de extensión. El complejo arqueológico pertenece a la cultura Nazca (Intermedio Temprano, 200 aC-700 dC.) y está compuesto por varias pirámides truncas construidas en adobe, muchas de las cuales fueron abandonadas durante los siglos V y VI dC.

Fue el centro habitacional y ritual más importante de la cultura Nazca que se desarrolló entre los 400 años después de Cristo y fue utilizado para hacer ofrendas relacionados con la agricultura que era su principal actividad. Para muchos investigadores, Cahuachi marca la pauta de expansión habitacional en la Costa Sur.

Existen también estructuras que cuentan con un patio abierto de un lado y una amplia terraza con recintos techados. En las cimas de los templos mayores, como en el caso del Gran Templo, se comprobó la existencia de grandes recintos cuyos techos fueron soportados por decenas de columnas.

Recientemente se ha llegado a la conclusión que las 'Líneas de Nazca' tenían un cometido exclusivamente ceremonial. Siendo el lugar al que los sacerdotes conducían al pueblo desde Cahuachi para realizar grandes ceremonias.
