Playa Roja is a beach of absolutely stunning beauty in Paracas National Reserve in Paracas, Peru known for the deep reddish color of the sands along its shore. This characteristic, most unusual along the Peruvian coast, has left visitors amazed and in awe for many years. When the waves of the Pacific Ocean crash against the cliffs of Punta Santa Maria, located slightly south of Playa Roja in Paracas, they pick up trace amounts of the red rock that makes up these cliffs, and over time, the receding tide has deposited enough of those fragments to create a sandy beach of the same rusty, reddish hue. The result is beautiful, bordering on the otherworldly: the blue pacific waters passing over the deep red sands. Playa Roja is located about five hours south of Lima in Paracas National Reserve, “where the desert meets the sea”, as the accompanying photo below captures poignantly. Paracas has the unique climate of a tropical desert, while also boasting some of Peru’s most awe-inspiring vistas. The reserve is located near the town of Pisco, and not too far from Nazca and Ica (the gateway to Huacachina). In other words, Paracas and the surrounding area are well worth the visit, especially if you are captivated by the thought of Playa Roja! Peruvian scientists found fossils of giant penguins on this desert beach in Paracas, Peru. The discoveries, documented in the February 2008 issue of National Geographic, suggest that the birds would have been five feet tall and tolerant of a hot climate.

One of the highlights of my time in Peru! It's like being on another planet with the desert stretching out to the Pacific coast. La Playa Roja was the last place I stopped on a little day out in the national park and it was by far my favourite. I'd do it all again for sure. While in Paracas I also did a boat tour out to sea the seals and penguins, and went out to the dunes with dune buggies! Great fun.

We rode our bikes all the way from Paracas city center to Playa Roja. It was a very tough ride- lots of uphill and against the wind. After two hours, we arrived Playa Roja. The view was amazing. You will also see seagulls showing off their flying skill in the wind. Bring a hat and wind proof jacket if you plan to stay a bit longer because it was very windy!
