Misleading and Deeply Unethical Experience at the “Butterfly Farm” in Bohol

This place was advertised as a butterfly farm, but the name is deeply misleading. While there was one small room with butterflies, the vast majority of the site was in fact a miniature zoo, where a handful of wild animals are kept in cramped, completely inappropriate enclosures.

The conditions are inhumane. Animals are confined to tiny cages, with no regard for their basic physical or psychological needs. The enclosure for the crocodiles, in particular, was alarmingly small and unacceptable. Some animals were visibly trembling from stress, yet tourists were allowed to enter the cages and touch them – causing even more fear and distress.

This is not a sanctuary or a farm. It is a cruel tourist trap that exploits animals for entertainment. There is no educational value, no conservation effort – just a disturbing display of neglect and suffering, disguised as a light-hearted stop for tourists.

The entire site is very small, poorly maintained, and absolutely not worth a visit – especially if you care about ethical treatment of animals.

As a traveler who values responsible tourism and basic compassion, I found this experience heartbreaking, backward, and unacceptable. Places like this should not be supported, and I strongly urge others to stay away unless serious changes are made.

Rating 0/5: do not recommend visiting this place under any circumstances. I have a video recording of my visit and would be happy to show you the reality...

25 Aug 2024 around 10am. Plenty of people, but there wasn't really a long line before you can enter. The tickets (100 PHP, and senior/PWD/student discount is not acknowledged) can be bought at the souvenir center's cashier. You start with the butterfly "garden" where there wasn't much to be seen. There are a few more animals in the area. As a photo opp, the place is recommendable, but overall, it might be better to leave this place alone. Most, if not all, of the animals I saw seem to be mishandled. Particularly the albino constrictors. At the snake photo area, there was one on the floor right beside the photo bench. It was all coiled up and did not react to anything, seemingly resting. Meanwhile, the one used for photos with guests felt antsy. I took a photo with that snake and noticed that it was not only shivering (in spite of the heat), but that it was shedding way too many scales. The lemur was kept in a cage, and it stayed in a corner, not even curious at any guests. Another set of constrictors are kept in a cage. One was relatively active (i.e., poising to attack) at the person who had his phone right by the cage taking photos. Consideing the 6 albinos I saw, I'm guessing that they are breeding them, but for the purpose of tourism exploitation. I will not recommend this place, I will not bring any guests, and I would like to see the government do an inspection/iinvestigation on the...

❌❌We do not recommend ❌❌visiting the butterfly garden in Bohol. No disrespect to those who enjoy this attraction, but our experience was deeply disappointing and even disturbing.

For 100₱, you’re led into the butterfly area, but the truth is, there were hardly any butterflies, and the conditions didn’t seem safe for the few that were there. A staff member offered to take our photo, and the experience turned out to be regrettable.

I initially thought he was using a fake butterfly for the photo, but to my horror, he pinched a live butterfly, and after the photo, he threw it to the ground. The butterfly tried to fly but couldn't, leaving me upset.

As we continued, we saw small cages crammed with different types of birds, all in a very confined space. The conditions seemed inhumane. Then, when it was time to see the snake, it was clear the animal was stressed, which added to my regret for having a photo in this place...

⚠️Caution: If you’re sensitive to animal welfare or are concerned about ethical treatment, this may not be the right attraction for you. Consider researching other options that prioritize the well-being of the...

animals are kept in unethical and delapitated conditions. Eagles (brahminy kite) kept in a cage it can never fly, a saltwater crocodile kept in a cage with some pooled water on the floor, a globally vulnerable binturong kept in a squalid and dirty cage where it doesn't stir from the floor, flying lemurs clinging to the top of the cage instead of from the side of trees where they should be naturally found, and a hornbill chained from its leg where it can only flap up a few centimeters from a fixed perch. Guides kept encouraging us to touch and hold and handle the pythons, which is obviously problematic and disregarding of animal welfare. If you care about animals, stay well away. Be careful and alert your hired driver may try to bring you here as well as the tarsier conservation area, know these two places are to be avoided and tell your driver clearly you want to visit the ethical alternatives - google and you'll find those easily written up in other blogposts etc. Be careful of the ethics surrounding animal and wildlife tourism.
