A must see itinerary when you visit Boljoon. El Grande Baluarte is the largest Spanish watchtower in the Philippines. This structure was built as early as 1808, more than a century ago.
I was so lucky when I visited this structure because there was a field trip conducted by a tour guide I saw from “Suroy2x Boljoon”. Got myself a free tour inside the tower! I'm so amazed by how this structure has been preserved for centuries already.
The tower has two floors; on the ground floor is a huge room that once served as a prison cell. You can still see drawings of galleons etched by the prisoners locked centuries ago inside the eerie prison cell.
The stairs going up the second floor is the most challenging part. It feels so shaky it feels like the stairs may collapse on every step you take. My tip here is to climb at the edge of each steps going up and going down.
