Bood Promontory and Eco Park Barangay Pinamanculan, Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, Philippines

Bood Promontory and Eco Park is one of Butuan City’s most iconic landmarks—an eco-historical site that beautifully combines nature, culture, and heritage. Located on a hill overlooking the Masao River and Butuan Bay, it offers a peaceful view surrounded by lush trees and open skies.

Visitors come here not just for its scenery but also for its deep historical roots, as this place is believed to be one of the earliest points of contact between locals and the Magellan expedition.

📜 Historical Background This hill site (locally called “Bood” in the Butuan dialect) holds dual historical significance.

Overlooking ancient Butuan and the Masao River, it is the highest elevation nearest to the seaside village of present-day Masao. It is believed to have been a silent witness to the glory of ancient Butuan—a powerful trading port with strong connections across Asia and a center of the gold industry from the 10th to the 13th centuries.

After the 13th century, Butuan began to decline as a major port. With trade shifting to Sulu, ancient Tausugs who traced their ethnic roots to Butuan would visit their homeland and plant the Hadlayati tree on this very site.

On March 31, 1521 (Easter Sunday), the Magellan expedition celebrated the first recorded Mass on Philippine soil on the island called Mazaua, attended by the brother-kings of Butuan and Mazaua — Rajah Calambu and Rajah Siaui.

That same afternoon, Magellan, his crew, and their native hosts planted a cross on the highest peak—believed to be this hill—before staying seven days in Butuan in their quest for gold.

🎟️ Entrance & Rates

Entrance Fee: No

Open daily: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

🌿 What to Expect

Historical monuments, cross marker, and statues of Magellan, Rajah Kolambu, and Rajah Siaui

Picnic areas, grotto, and resting sheds for families and tourists

Bood Promontory and Eco Park is more than a scenic destination—it’s a living reminder of Butuan’s rich history and culture. Whether you’re here to admire nature, explore historical roots, or enjoy quiet reflection, this hill remains one of the most meaningful and peaceful places in the city.

The bood ecopark is located in Bancasi, Butuan City. Upon our entry in the ecopark we saw a gang of skate boarders and thought of yeah this place is ideal for skateboarders because of the slope road. We parked at their parking space before going to the ecopark we bought some snacks like break and halo halo from ChowKing. We roamed the park and saw some garbage which is disappointing, there are also vandalisms by some people who visited the eco park in the past. We walked accross the hanging bridge over a river it was a frightful experience at first for me because I'm afraid of heights but soon after I got the hang of getting on the hanging bridge. Later we took some pictures and got to appreciate the wonders of nature the tall trees, birds making their sound. The best experience for me on visiting the park is seeing the big cross which is...

I did not expect that this place was a great place to hang out with friends. Not only it is surrounded with tall and lush green trees. It has symbolic landmarks that represent the First Mass of Butuan.

There are also few shed and concrete chairs to relax and enjoy the view, have a good conversation and have a picnic with friends

Our first objective was to do our training program Hill Repeats. It is also a good place to train early in the morning when the sun rises. Even if it's tiring after a workout, you can feel rejuvenated because of the fresh and cool air around.

Note: it is best to be with a buddy or with friends just to be sure that you're secure. Being alone in this place may...
