CANDON CHURCH c. 1695 San Juan de Sahagun Church đ Candon City, Ilocos Sur
The Augustinians begun their ecclesiastical mission of Candon in 1591 but the first stone church was constructed in 1695. The original building measured about 70 meters long reinforced by buttresses made from stones and bricks. The design of the facade was earthquake-baroque style with octagonal bell tower.
It was severely damaged in the 1707 earthquake but was rebuilt under the supervision of Father Jose Carbonel until 1710, and Father Diego del Castillo until 1713.
The church is situated next to the place where Isabelo Abaya together with the Ilokano revolutionists declared the Philippine Independence on March 25, 1898. This historic event was known as the "Ikkis Ti Candon (Sigaw ng Candon). Unfortunately, two days later, the Spaniards reclaimed Candon.
During World War II on January 1942, the Japanese forces burned the town but miraculously, the church was spared.
Today, San Juan de Sahagun Church houses the LONGEST religious paintings in the Philippines. It is one of the tourist spots of Candon City, the tobacco capital of the Philippines.

The Tigbauan Church is unique in the country because of its Latin American churriquesque architecture. The church was constructed in 1575 and destroyed during an earthquake in 1948. Tigbauanâs facade is style in the Mexican plateresque. At the center is a seal of the Augustinian order surrounded by a retablo-like floral frieze, which fills the central section. Above the seal is a niche flanked by pilasters embellished with flowers and upon it is a depiction of San Juan. Capping the relief is the image of Santo Niño.
