A Sanctuary in the Hills: My Serene Memories of Calaruega Church Calaruega Church isn't a grand, ancient basilica like some of the others in Batangas, but it holds a unique and incredibly special place in my heart. Nestled amidst the rolling hills and lush greenery of Nasugbu, it's less a towering monument and more a serene sanctuary, a place where nature and faith intertwine to create an atmosphere of profound peace. Every visit feels like an escape, a chance to breathe deeply and reconnect. My first encounter with Calaruega was relatively recent compared to my other church memories. It was sometime in the late 2000s, when its reputation as a picturesque wedding venue and retreat center began to truly blossom. A dear friend was getting married there, and as we drove up the winding, scenic roads, the sense of anticipation grew. When I first saw the church, tucked away like a hidden gem, I was immediately struck by its unassuming beauty. It wasn't the ornate grandeur of centuries-old European cathedrals, but rather a simple, elegant structure of stone and wood, perfectly harmonizing with its natural surroundings. The chapel, dedicated to the Transfiguration, felt intimate and inviting, a stark contrast to the vast spaces of older churches. The history of Calaruega is tied to the Dominican Fathers. It was envisioned as a haven for prayer, reflection, and spiritual formation, inspired by the birthplace of St. Dominic de Guzman in Caleruega, Spain. The construction of the chapel and the surrounding retreat facilities began in the late 1990s, slowly transforming the property into the tranquil destination it is today. I remember hearing stories about how the Dominicans carefully planned the layout, incorporating elements that encouraged contemplation, like the "Suspension Bridge" leading to the "Hill of Manaoag" or the "Koi Pond." This deliberate design, aimed at fostering spiritual growth, is something I deeply appreciate. It's not just a place for services; it's an entire environment built for reflection. Over the years, Calaruega has become a recurring backdrop for significant moments. After that first wedding, I've returned for other joyous celebrations – baptisms, anniversaries, and even just quiet getaways with family and friends. Each visit adds another layer to my memories. I recall a particularly serene afternoon spent walking the grounds with my mother, marveling at the vibrant flowers and the panoramic views of the Batangas landscape. We found a quiet bench by the stream, simply enjoying the stillness, a rare luxury in our busy lives. Another time, during a personal period of introspection, I spent an hour inside the main chapel, the soft light filtering through the stained glass, feeling a profound sense of calm wash over me. The very air there seems to carry a gentle peace. What truly sets Calaruega apart for me is this pervasive sense of tranquility. It's a place where the grandeur isn't in scale, but in the quiet beauty of its design and its seamless integration with nature. The sound of birds chirping, the rustle of leaves, the gentle flow of water – these are as much a part of the spiritual experience as the prayers themselves. Calaruega Church is more than just a beautiful chapel; it's a testament to creating a sacred space that nurtures the soul. For me, it's a treasure trove of peaceful memories, a consistent reminder of the quiet power of faith and the profound beauty found in nature's embrace. It's a place I always look forward to returning to, knowing it will offer solace and a renewed sense of serenity.

Clear skies stretched endlessly above, a canvas of vibrant blue unmarred by clouds. The sunlight filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The crystalline waters of the river flowed gently, revealing the colorful pebbles beneath. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and earth, offering a clarity rarely found in bustling cities. In this serene haven, the silence was broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze. Nature's clarity enveloped everything, from the symphony of chirping birds to the distant echo of a flowing stream. Each breath brought a sense of purity, cleansing the mind of worries and allowing clarity of thought to flourish. The landscape's beauty was almost surreal, as if painted with meticulous strokes of an artist's brush. The panorama of rolling hills in the distance provided a backdrop of tranquil elegance. Here, clarity wasn't just a visual spectacle but an immersive experience—a soothing balm for the soul, a reminder of the simplicity and wonder of the natural world.

Nice place. The chapel, the ascending path and green retreat houses along the path create a nuance of peace. The station of the cross directing to the garden bears an acculturation of dioramas. At the last station there's a garden gate that directs us right into the trees canopy. The iron path guides us descending into the ground. At different levels of grounds, there are ponds of koi. The voice of the water streams cool off our heart. At the lowerest ground, we are guided to a gate of the hanging bridge. Though it is narrow, it takes us to another ground across. It is a rather steep hills and on top of the hills, there's a white open air Chappelle. The last hill is recently arranged because the trees still small and shorts and the cemented path are not yet done. Some locals build shops near the fence. So we could enjoy some fresh young coconut (buko) and caramelized banana (turon) as the compensation of the hikes.
