General Douglas MacArthur played a significant role in the history of Leyte, particularly during World War II. Here's a brief overview: 1. Leyte Landing: One of the most iconic events associated with MacArthur in Leyte is his return to the Philippines. On October 20, 1944, he fulfilled his famous promise of "I shall return" when he landed on the shores of Leyte. This marked the beginning of the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation. 2. Battle of Leyte Gulf: Following MacArthur's return, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, which took place in October 1944, was one of the largest naval battles in history. It was a decisive victory for the Allied forces and a turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II. The battle allowed for the further liberation of the Philippines. 3. Leyte as a Liberation Point: Leyte served as a crucial base for the U.S. and Allied forces as they continued their campaign to liberate the Philippines. Tacloban, the capital of Leyte, became a major logistical and military hub during this period. 4. Leyte Today: Today, Leyte has several historical sites and monuments commemorating MacArthur's return and the events of World War II, including the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park in Palo, Leyte, where MacArthur's landing is remembered. MacArthur's return to Leyte was a pivotal moment in the history of the Philippines and the Pacific theater of World War II, as it marked the beginning of the end for Japanese occupation in the Philippines.

Going to this place. For starter, lemme tell you why we need to come here... it is because this is where our hopes we're built from. I wasn't borne yet when the Japanese were here but I know what they did (thru history.) Anyway, It is easy to get here. You just ride a jeep (fare starts at Php8-) or van going to Palo. Then you drop off in Rusi or crossing..from there you take a walk and find a green-colored tricycle. Ride it and pay Php10-. You will see that it is about 2km away from crossing. The plaza is beautiful, clean and near the beach. I was there late in the afternoon and students and other people are jammed pack there. You can play or play soccer there. Talk with friends, think while watching the sea. And then when you get hungry opposite of the plaza are the many vendors selling, ranging from isaw to batchoy to bbq. (Btw, prepare your pockets as the prices of the food starts at Php10-)

A visit in Leyte for first time travelers wouldn't be complete without seeing Leyte Landing Memorial or commonly known us McArthur Shrine. I used to see this iconic landmark only in my history books when I was little. Seeing this landmark for the very first time, I was happy as a clam! The best thing to do while you're in this place is to take photographs of the huge statues of Gen. Douglas McArthur and company as well as the surrounding area. You can also relax and have some good time with your friends or get in tune or meditate if you're traveling solo as the seaside view of this area is breathtaking. Travel Tip: To reach this place via Tacloban, ride a jeepney bound for Campetic. During my visit I rode a jeep from Marasbaras and it costs around P7.00 to Palo. Tell the driver to drop you off BIR. From there you can ride a tricycle to McArthur Shrine. It costs around P10.00/head per ride.

This is a 'must visit' location for anyone with an interest in World War II history and how a 'promise made' by MacArthur to the Philippines citizens, was a 'promise kept'. I recommend visiting in the memorial during the late afternoon when the light of the western sun illuminates the larger than life statues of the men striding ashore, from allied landing craft. General MacArthur is accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Sutherland and high ranking officers. Philippine President Sergio Osmena is on the far left. Francisco Salveron, General Macarthur's aide de camp, is on the far right. This is a magnificent memorial to all allied forces who liberated the Philippine citizens back in 1944. I look forward to the 80th Anniversary commemorations of this event on Sunday, 20th October 2024 at this location.

The war memorial is located in the municipality of Palo on Leyte island in Eastern Visayas and is one of the region's major tourist attractions. It was declared a national park on 12 July 1977 through Letter of Instructions No. 572 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos

This location is an ideal spot for families looking to enjoy a picnic or a quick break from the hustle and bustle of city life. The coastal waters nearby provide a refreshing breeze that can help uplift one's mood. However, it's essential to note that while the area is open to the public, it's important to respect the environment and other visitors. Unfortunately, some dog owners have been letting their pets defecate in the area, which can create a health hazard and spoil the natural beauty of the surroundings. It's important to remind pet owners to be responsible and bring bags to clean up after their pets. Dog owners should also keep their pets on a leash to prevent them from wandering off and disturbing other visitors.
