We set out to Roxas City early on Friday morning to enjoy the seafood and see the Alcatraz Ruins in Barangay Nipa, Roxas City. I was amazed by its strategic location, but I was curious about the story behind the Alcatraz Ruins that I want to write a review.

The Alcatraz Ruins is locally known as the Bermejo Alcatraz, owned by the Bermejo family and the fortress was like those in the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco, U.S.A.

My analogy is if they built the Alcatraz Prison walls to keep notorious criminals from escaping the Alcatraz Ruins' massive walls could be to protect the integrity of the plateau and keep it intact once the resort is open.

The main attraction of Alcatraz Ruins is the massive walls of its facade used as cinematic inspirations in the movie The Maze Runner and the anime Attack on Titan.

Being on the northeastern part of Panay Island makes for a perfect spot to watch the sunrise. If my research serves me right, the original plan was to develop Alcatraz into a resort and ultimately a tourist spot by building an infinity pool and restaurant at the top of the plateau.

For unconfirmed reasons, the Bermejos abandoned the place because of family problems or politics that kept them from developing this resort. I heard of plans for rehabilitation, but Super Typhoon Yolanda made them think otherwise.

You must take at least 100 steps (I lost count) to reach the top of the plateau, but it's well worth it. The top is like a labyrinth because of its circular shape without the geometric paths, of course. It was a wonderful sight to behold the expanse of the sea. For now, it is an idyllic spot...

I researched about this place before we got here. I was expecting to see what was behind that fortress. I must admit that I was disappointed when we got there and reached the top. I expected to see the ruins of the resort made by Super Typhoon Yolanda, but there wasn't. The children were not very reliable either. It is no fault of their own. The Ruins were there long before they were born, so what do you expect? And besides, they are not professional tour guides.

Ruins of Alcatraz is also known to locals as the Bermejo Alcatraz. As legend has it, the original plan was to build a hotel (maybe the proposed spot is behind those walls), an infinity pool, and restaurants on top of the plateau. But, due to family circumstances or politics, they abandoned the construction.

Even in photographs, the Ruins of Alcatraz looked mysterious. Was there ever anything behind those walls? Standing in front of those massive walls makes you feel in The Maze Runner movie. The writer indeed used these walls as a prototype for the story. Watch The Maze Runner movie, so you'll know what I mean.

Anyway, some claimed that the forbidding walls are similar to the fortress of the Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco, U.S.A. Well, almost. I haven't been there to confirm this for sure.

Climb up the 100 steps winding stairs on the side of the wall to reach the top of the plateau. I believe it is a perfect spot for watching the sunrise or the sunset. Unfortunately, we were not there to witness it. Ideally, this place is fantastic for reading, meditation, and even star...

The Ruins of Alcatraz in Roxas City is a fascinating place to visit, offering a unique glimpse into the area’s history and charm. When planning your visit, it’s helpful to note that local residents manage the site and may request a small parking fee. They also offer guiding services, allowing visitors to enjoy a more in-depth tour experience if desired.

One delightful aspect of visiting the Ruins of Alcatraz is the presence of local children who often help tourists by taking memorable photos and sharing interesting facts about the site. Their enthusiasm and knowledge are impressive, especially given their young age, and they contribute to a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

It's important to remember that there are no vendors around the site, so you won’t find snacks or water for sale nearby. Be prepared by bringing your own refreshments, as the ruins are a short walk from the main road. Overall, the Ruins of Alcatraz is a picturesque and distinctive location, well worth a visit for its historical ambiance and...
