Visiting Masjid Shiekh Karimul Makdhum in Simunul is a travel that brings you back in time. This is birth of Islam in the Philippines, if not in the whole ancient austronesian communities. Stepping into centuries old ancestral artifact, is a living witness of the rich cultural heritage of our past. One of the visits that you should make in your lifetime.

This mosque houses the four pillars of the first mosque in the Philippines. The local office also allows you to rent malong (izar) and shalwar (pants) kameez (tunic; top) for free although there is a box for voluntary cash donation for maintenance of the place.

Prior entering, you'll have to wear the traditional dress as a way of respect to the culture. I had a great talk to one of the caretaker/tour rep of the Mosque and learned a lot bat the culture, this as they say, the birthplace of Islam in the Philippines.
