Boyen Fortress — Attraction in Giżycko

Location: Giżycko, Mazowia, Poland. The fort is located on a hill close to the city centre. From the city centre it can be reached on foot, otherwise the road leading to the top is essentially a parking lot. The fort itself is a museum and as of writing this review (2023-08) the entrance price is 18 PLN. The territory is huge and you can follow one of the three marked routes. You are issued a schematic map along with the ticket. The problem is that in its current state this fort is of little interest for the vast majority of tourists: for the most part what you see are bare walls with zero historical context. There are some signs here and there, some buildings host exhibitions, but the rest of the territory is in the state of neglect. Overgrown with weeds, grass, bushes and trees to a point where it almost looks like a forest. A guided tour would certainly make more sense. If you like to wander around fortifications and are ready to do your own research, then it is worth visiting, otherwise - think twice since you...

To start with.. most of the tour is in polish, when you invite foreign tourists and ask them to pay please be so kind to put info in other languages as well. You have to pay for entrance, if you want some brochure with description - pay additionally. Fortress itself as an architectural heritage is amazing, though potential for tourism is undeveloped, large part is abandoned. Content in fortress is boring and, as mentioned, in polish. Further, there is one shed rebuilt, which is an extraordinary example of waste of money, has no value at all. Finally there's a place called gunpowder lab - reconstructed, restored part of fortress, again millions invested, but has nothing to do with what it used to be - few guns from various historical periods, best I guess is a wooden spear made by themselves from local hazelnut tree stick :))) give 2 stars only because of the potential and architectural, historical value. Obowiązkowy punkt turysty szukającego ciekawych miejsc z Giżycku. Ogromny teren z rozsianymi po nim budynkami przeróżnego przeznaczenia i w różnym stanie (od bardzo dobrze utrzymanych aż po rozpadające się ruiny) Dla osób interesujących się tego typu obiektami - na 2,5-3 godzinki eksploracji. Dla maniaków - to i 5 h można tu siedzieć zgłębiając dokładnie wszystkie wystawy, studiując eksponaty i pochłaniając niezliczone treści z tablic zapisanych historią tego miejsca i jego wpływu na działania wojenne, wpływu na życie miasta. Do obejścia aż trzy szlaki oznaczone kolorami - polecę czerwony z którego warto (posługując się mapką) zboczyć co jakiś czas do ciekawych miejsc z dwóch pozostałych szlaków. Na duży plus - ta właśnie mapka wręczana każdemu turyście. Bez niej naprawdę można łatwo zboczyć ze "szlaku", przeoczyć niektóre obiekty, a sporo jest naprawdę ciekawych! Kolejny, bardzo duży plus - to kod QR który uruchamia - bazujący na mapach Google - przewodnik z dodatkowymi informacjami dotyczącymi wielu z mijanych miejsc / budynków. Sam przewodnik nie jest idealny, ma trochę wad, ale potencjał ma ogromny, więc warto go (tu słowo do szefostwa) rozwijać, ulepszać, żeby coraz lepiej służył turystom, bo idea jest świetna. Dodatkowo, jeśli ktoś po drodze coś popsuje, zgubi ten przewodnik we własnym smartfonie - nie ma problemu, bo kod QR do niego powtarza się często na tablicach i drogowskazach na terenie twierdzy - kolejny świetny pomysł. Można zeskanować ponownie i już mamy przewodnik na pierwszym planie. Jedyna wada jest taka, że prawie każdy budynek ma tak potężne mury, że fale komórkowe nie przechodzą - w efekcie najlepiej jest poczytać o miejscu przed wejściem do niego, lub po wyjściu. Kolejny plus - bardzo niewiele jest miesc z zakazem wstępu co daje spore możliwości myszkowania i takiego a'la "urbexu" we własnym wykonaniu - super sprawa dająca dodatkowych emocji :-) Przed sezonem turystycznym - tu znowu do szefostwa - warto odświeżyć niektóre znaki, oczyścić / odświeżyć tablice informacyjne (szczególnie te na wolnym powietrzu), żeby informacja na nich była czytelna.
