What a disappointing tour - if you are not Polish! If you do not speak Polish, you get an audio guide. The audio guide however is inadequate. They put non- Polish speakers all together in a group with polish speakers who have an actual human guide. Some sections of the audio guide lasts for 2 minutes, say. Then you have to then wait until the human tour guide speaks to the rest of the group for a further 5 minutes or more. Why can't the audio guide be the same content as if you were a Polish speaking tourist? I thought the whole experience was to attract tourists from all over the world to spend their money here and learn about Polish history. Also, the tour guide is loud, so the people listening to headphones (sorry, 'headphone' because they only give you one!) can't actually hear what is being said in their ear. So the audio guide people linger at the back and then get told off (quite rudely) by the guide for being left behind whilst they are still listening. Some sections of the tour were spoken by the tour guide in Polish and were completely missed off the audio guide. It is a shame because this piece of history is very important and interesting to this part of Poland. I came away feeling that because I wasn't a Polish speaker, I was treated like a second class citizen. Either make the audio guide much better or seperate the Polish speakers from the...
Read moreI do not understand how this place has such high reviews. It's thee most boring tour i have ever taken part in. The tour guide was awful " if you want to learn about project reise, buy a book and read it" This was advertised as an underground city....it's just a mine. 2 videos where the english subtitles are blurred out. There was no feeling to the mine at all. And instead of focusing on history I was told about how big the rocks are etc. As someone who loves history, this was the most awful historical experience I've had. Most boring place in Poland with the most boring tour guide in history. I would not recommend it to anyone that has been anywhere else other than this small town. In summary, a massive pile of....... The best part about the tour was leaving and being able to have a cigarette as I felt I had just served a prison sentence. Do not advertise it as an underground city. It's a mine with empty shafts and a few old planks of wood. Boring staged videos. History is meant to be fun and accessible. Not stupidly boring and disgustingly misadvertised as an amazing place to visit. I can't give 0 stars but if I could I would. A complete waste of petrol, time and a part of my holiday in Poland which other than this really terrible tour, has been a beautiful country. Do not go here if you want to...
Read moreLook, you've got to give credit to the work that is done here to enable people to visit these underground structures.
The place breathes history and learning (again) what these slave labourers had to endure can only bring tears to your heart. But seeing what they had to do with your own eyes, standing right there, makes it even harder. It is a must do when you are around, just to make the horrors of war slave labour more tangible. Something that we may not forget.
That being said, there are some elements that could improve. Though it seemed that the Polish guide was very knowledgeable and explained everything in a lot of detail, it is not the case for the English audioguide. Clearly, there was information lacking, stories that we've missed (even references to spiders living in the underground complex) and stories shortened. The movies displayed were well-translated, but the rest not so much. Other visitors with audioguides clearly had a similar experience as we were standing to up to 10mins just waiting around.
I would recommend visiting the halls below Ksiaz Castle for a better audioguide experience in English on the Riese project. However, the complex itself is more impressive at...
