I stumbled upon this little tower museum in Lubań after I missed my train back to Wrocław following a stay at Czocha Castle Hotel. With two hours to spare and the museum only about a 10-minute walk from the station, I decided to check it out.
At first, I wasn’t sure how to get inside — I tried calling the number listed on the door but it didn’t work. Luckily, some visitors were leaving, and I slipped in through the open door. On the second level I found a small exhibition space with stones on display and an older gentleman sitting by the counter, speaking with other visitors. When I asked about tickets, he smiled and said, “Free!” (because it was Tuesday). I then asked if I could go upstairs, and with a warm gesture he said, “Please!”
I climbed the spiraling wooden staircase up to the observation deck, where I enjoyed a wonderful panoramic view of the town. When I came back down, I wandered around the stone collection and asked the gentleman a question, but he couldn’t explain in English. A few minutes later, he came over with a smile and told me that a friend who spoke English would be arriving shortly.
Sure enough, a young lady soon appeared and kindly offered to answer my questions. She gave me a tour of the mineral stones and also showed me a fascinating collection of glass and stones that glowed neon under ultraviolet light. She explained that these were borrowed from other museums, but they hope to acquire their own collection soon.
Before leaving, I shook hands with both the older gentleman and the young lady. I was deeply touched by their hospitality — it felt less like a typical museum visit and more like being welcomed as a guest in someone’s home.
I’m very grateful for the kindness of the staff, and I highly recommend other travelers to visit this charming and interesting museum if you find yourself in this quiet old...
