The Blue Springs (Niebieskie Źródła) nature reserve in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, central Poland is a unique place known for its outstanding natural beauty. The carstic springs occurred naturally as a result of geological processes involving water coming from underground and bubbling forth to the surface through layers of limestone and other sedimentary materials dating back to jurassic period. The reserve derives its name from the unusual colour of the water. Spring water absorbs red waves, hence the light, reflected from the bottom, has intense blue-green colour. It also depnds on time of the day and the altitude of the sun. The Blue Springs are home to hundreds of spieces of birds and other small species of animals. A great place to take a walk with the family along the path that follows the river as it winds through the woodland. Apparently, the water levels here used to be much higher and there were even steam boats cruising up and down the river. Over the years the volume of water has declined, in part due to the building of the new bridge nearby: vibrations form the traffic have weakened the subsoil and the water table is much lower now. When you get to the springs at the head of the river you can clearly see the water bubbling up through the limestone and sand and on a sunny day the “blue” of the water is...
