Twierdza Zamość — Attraction in Zamość

Came to Zamość yesterday after hearing the story of the town's foundation in the 1500s and preservation during WWII. I had no idea what to expect, dropped my bags at the hostel and started wandering around in the glorious afternoon sun. By the end of the day I'd be firing a cannon in a Polish fort!

After google-translating my way around the walls for a while I blundered into the main building and found I couldn't buy tickets for the underground passage (the so called trasa turystyczna or "tourist route" mentioned on a bunch of signs) unless I had some cash. I was happy to keep wandering and blundered into the replica battlefield at the foot if the walls.

I saw the sign that offered "shooting medium cannon" for 90 zl, went in to the tent but don't speak Polish so I got shy and left. After a word with myself outside I went back in and asked, my man smirked and said "5 minutes" then ran off and came back with a little voice recorder that translates his Polish phrases into English for me.

He explained about the cannon, loaded it with gunpowder, wheeled it out onto the field, and as we were about to fire some other tourists wandered up. He warned them off in Polish, then we lit the fuse together. I saw him put his fingers in his ears just in time - it's loud!

Meeting this man and firing this cannon was the highlight of my time in Poland. He gave me a certificate that says I'm in the Polish army now, and this is not a responsibility I...
