When the Romans conquered the Lusitanian Castro around the middle of the 2nd century, the settlement was transformed into a politico-administrative center named Paderna. It controlled the ancient Roman road Via Lusitanorum, which crossed the Quarteira River to the south.
The Almohads (the Moors) began an intensive period of military construction and fortification in the Algarve (in Paderne, Faro, Loulé, Silves, and many other locations). In 1248, D. Paio Peres Correia took the castle for the Crown of Portugal, during the reign of Afonso III.
Owing to its isolation and state of ruin, in 1858, the castle was abandoned.

This is an excellent and well-marked trail circuit, ideal for hiking, single-track mountain biking, and immersing yourself in the region’s rich history, diverse wildlife, and vibrant plant life. Unfortunately, some visitors—often on “Safari” jeep tours—miss out on these experiences, driving directly to the castle without exploring the surrounding area. Read moreGot to see really beautiful spots around Albufeira and Portugal on our safari trip. Highly recommend it - in and around beautiful villages we would have never seen if we didn’t opt for this tour. This castle was getting refurbished as the building is slightly disintegrating due to the weathers. You can see it internally early in the morning but if going later in the afternoon or evening you can’t see it. However, Got to see some really cool pieces of Portugal too I reckon all this spots are easy to get to if you have a car too, but it was so good to be driven around in a 4x4 safari...
