Glass Museum — Attraction in Alcobaça

The history of Portuguese glass-making is practically covered when visiting this museum. It is located in Ovar which has an amazing array of tiles on buildings, not too far from Porto and accessible by train. Beautiful displays of many different types of historical as well as contemporary glassware whilst explaining the production process as you walk through. Tours are not done with a guide but this allows time to see things at your own pace. There is also a separate workshop where two experienced glassmakers in their 80's (!) cut and make beautiful pieces for purchase. I thought it was pretty interesting. Normally €1.50, it was free for tourists in the day we visited. Some signs in the second and third floor were in English, but the bottom floor is totally Portuguese for some reason. There is the little workshop adjacent where two old men do some small examples of their craft and have items for sale as well. Visiting here is free. Uma excelente surpresa... Sem grandes expetativas e tendo como objetivo construir um passeio que fugisse dos lugares-comuns do centro-oeste de Portugal, decidimos visitar a cidade da Marinha Grande. Cidade de cariz industrial, em declínio nessa vertente, como é bom de ver, depois de almoço, procurámos um museu do vidro. Parecia-nos evidente que teria de existir um espaço que capturasse a história do fabrico do vidro, tendo em conta a importância dessa indústria na vida da cidade, que trespassou mais de três séculos e muitas mais gerações dos seus habitantes e trabalhadores (do séc. XVIII ao séc. XX). O museu, gerido pelo município, foi uma excelente surpresa: para além das oficinas ao vivo, onde os artesões das indústrias de outrora, continuam a demonstrar o seu mister, o espaço museológico está bem delimitado no tempo histórico e nas diversas funções do vidro. Apesar de não haver guia para visita, esta pode ser apoiada por um tablet (fornecido na bilheteira) que colmata essa lacuna com uma aplicação que faz uso de vídeos de realidade aumentada num storytelling que consegue interessar miúdos e graúdos....
