My wife and I highly recommend a wine tour and tasting at Quinta do Jalloto. The small vineyard and winery is located in the hills just above Pinhão and is owned and operated by the Moreira family. The location of the winery is beautiful and the tour was very small and personal when compared with some of the large wineries in the Douro Valley. Antonio, one of the fifth generation brothers provided us with an in-depth look at both the key aspects of growing grapes on their Douro property and the tradition involved in making their wines. The winery has beautiful views over the Douro Valley, and we very much enjoyed the tour, tasting, and tapas with the tapas board also including olive oil from their trees. The indoor tasting area and outdoor patio were built to a very high aesthetic standard and add to the enjoyment of their excellent wines. If your visit to the Douro Valley brings you near Pinhão, a visit to Quinta do Jalloto will add to your understanding of the valley and its winemaking tradition. A special thank you to Antonio whose kindness was very much appreciated...
Read moreBeautiful setting - incredible view of the valley with a well designed sitting area. Great selection of white, rose, red and port wines. The 1997 port was delicious! Food: 4-person tapas includes cured meats, olives, pumpkin jam, and bread. The portion might look small, but consists of high-quality ingredients. Supplemented with house-made honey and olive oil (with servings of bread), and both of them were outstanding. Family run operation by 5th generation of winemakers - mother & father served the tapas, while the adult son served the wine. He provided great service, was knowledgeable about the wine/region, and spoke fluent English. Being a small operation it’s helpful to make reservation beforehand, so they have your tapas ready quickly. Nice hike to get up here from Pinhao (from Quinta de Bonfim). around a 1000ft/300m ascent. Steep and very little shade, but beautiful views throughout. Doable with children. If there is still road construction, you can bypass it through...
Read moreA small but beautiful vineyard at the top of the Valley. Quinta do Jalloto was our first wine tasting experience and it was a great visit. The Quinta is reached by traveling by train to Pinhão station and then walking uphill. The walk is not easy, especially during summer as there are lot less shade. You can also get a taxi to the place, or travel by your own car if you have one. On arriving at the Quinta, we immediately got to experience an excellent view of the Valley and the Douro river. The owner is very kind and helpful. We started the tour in the wine cellar with the owner explaining about the wine-making process. The cellars are small as it’s a small family run business. In addition to wine, they have honey and olive oil. We however felt that the tour could have been slightly more interactive. Also, there was much explained, but in very short time. The wine tasting experience was great and is definitely...
