Mata da Margaraça — Attraction in Arganil

Maybe I was expecting too much... but I came out somewhat disappointed. This piece of forest is a rare example of the original forest covering the Iberian Peninsula 2,000 years ago. No sign of wild pines, not sign of the horrendous eucalyptus and other invasive species. I heard that wild fires ravaged the area just outside the perimeter of the park which makes it look smaller and a kind of an natural island. Anyway, I was expecting it bigger and with much more guidance and information, which was pretty much non-existent at the time...

This review is about the ICNF building and the poster presentation in it. I really liked all the information that I could read about the Açor Mountain Range, its habitats and fauna, very informative and interesting. Unfortunately, the posters were only in Portuguese, but the large touchscreen display had some information in English and other languages as well. Es un bosque de Laurisilva interesante, sería como lo que en el norte de España conocemos por una Fraga, desde el centro de interpretación (que ojo está cerrado los fines de semana, así que llevar información de casa) donde hay unas tres mesas o así para hacer picnic y varias fuentes, de allí sale una pequeña ruta de apenas 30 min -45 min aunque en el panel ponga mayor duración, por la zona de bosque- riachuelo, está interesante llegar hasta la zona del río/pozas/antigüo molino, no está nada masificado y sin embargo unos kilómetros por carretera más adelante la Fraga da Pena está totalmente invadida de coches y gente que nos hizo inviable si quiera parar a visitarla. Es una alternativa de sombra y frescor si quieres huir de multitudes en verano. Resalto también que es un pequeño oasis en una zona claramente atacada sin piedad por los incendios.
