A wonderful gift shop and museum in a small mountain village. Very worthy of a stop on your journey.
Nestled in the quiet Aldeias do Xisto region, in the village of Aigra Nova, this is one of the best gift shops I've been to. It's small, but it's full of all sorts of local treats and products. It is not a minimercado, so you're not going to find staples for shopping, but there are lots of jams, local flower honey, baked goods, and more. There are also books, folk art, crafts, and souvenirs. They support a lot of local farmers and artisans. Everything is very good prices, which is also a great and unexpected bonus.
Through a small door is the ecomuseum that has a lot of information about the local history, culture, and farming, especially the role of cork. There is another section that focuses on flora and fauna. The exhibits are thorough and informative, and actually quite interesting. It's a high-quality museum for such a small and niche region.
Upstairs is a loft for gatherings and eating. There is a section where breakfast is served for guests of the local ALs also operated by Lousitânea tourism. Sometimes, there is a tiny café outside, but it seems to be mainly a high season thing. Also, during some special events, there are pop-ups in the kitchen. When I was there, they were selling traditional filhós.
The best part is the amazing staff that work here. They are all so dedicated and helpful. I rarely see tourism staff who appear to enjoy their jobs like this. Every one of them I met was open, warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable about the area and everything to do. They are enthusiastic and eager to share suggestions and knowledge about the whole region, and conversation is very easy, in Portuguese and English!
It is definitely a place you simply must visit if you are travelling around the...
