We came for one day trip to Faial Island and on our way back to Horta port we stopped at this place. Fog was coming and going, with some sparks if sunshine ....place was worth to see anyway with very nice views to Horta and Pico mountain on clear day. We saw cloudes only but we believe it was there. 🙂 Deep large caldera with possibility to walk around the edge. For this we had no time, we needed to catch our car ferry to Pico in the evening. The access was easy by relatively new road (from horta) that finish few meters from caldera. However we came by some inland road from the north coast od Faial which was not well maintained. But it was scenic and even small car could manage. 🙂 In the time of our visit there were few cars, but all left and we had place...

I recently had the opportunity to visit the caldera, and I must say it was an exceptional experience. The natural beauty and serenity of the area made for a fantastic hiking destination. Even though the visibility was limited due to cloud cover, the atmosphere still felt mystical. The clouds rolling through the landscape added a certain dramatic flair that I found enchanting.

However, it's worth noting that you'll need a bit of luck to catch a day without any clouds obstructing the view. But even if you don't, the hiking trails and natural surroundings are more than enough to make the trip worthwhile.

In summary, a visit to the caldera is a must for anyone who loves...

Caldeira is the oldest vulcano in Fajal the errupted in the18th century and basically now it's only a huge hole. It has some activity inside when the other vulcans on the island erupt such as Capelinhos. A local told us that there used to be a big lake and after the latest eruption in los Capelinhos it started boiling, and killed all the fish and all the water evaporated. Now there are 3 much smaller lakes that you can only visit with a guide. About the Caldeira, you can walk all the way around after getting by car right under it. The walk is pretty easy and It takes between 3 and 4 house. Nice view of the islands around...

This hike has incredible views that are different at every point in the walk. It was an easy hike, with moderately difficult spots because the trail is ver narrow. We came around 16:00 on a clear day and had gorgeous vistas of Pico, the caldeira, and the ocean. The bugs didn’t bite, although they were a bit pesky at times. Hydrangeas blooming all over the trail made for a really lovely walk. I proposed to my girlfriend along the way, so maybe I’m biased, but the photos speak for themselves. It also wasn’t crowded at all. We passed maybe 5 people total in the four hours we spent up there.
