Nestled in a valley among the vineyards, we arrived at the dreamy vine-covered primrose yellow family home for our very personal wine tasting. “Amaryllis yellow”, we found out, as the estate is named after the flower: Quinta Casa Amarela.
Gil Regueiro, the fifth generation owner of this charming, family-run winery, has an infectious passion for wines. It was an intimate, lively impression of the vineyard, its history, the Duoro valley, wine-making and Portugal.
“They’re alive, like us” said Gil of his port wines, which is why he plays Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on loop in the cellar for the oldest vintage. He is convinced that the music has a positive effect. We’ll be the judge of that. We have a bottle of 10yr old tawny port in our luggage with which to extend our experience of the Duoro valley once we get home. We will be looking out for these superb wines in Switzerland in future!
We stayed in the accommodation on the adjoining property. We loved the sophisticated, rustic and comfortable atmosphere. We were welcomed to treat the place like home, with shared breakfasts at a large dining table and different spaces on the property where one could relax and enjoy the view, listen to the breeze rustling through the vineyards. Andre’ helped us shape our itinerary on a daily basis, usually at breakfast, making reservations as...
Read moreJune, 2022 found us exploring the Douro Valley. It was our great fortune to discover Quinta da Casa Amarela. Our host, Gil, was delightful and charming. We were roomed in a guesthouse where classic antique blended with elegant modernity. The views from the living area were amazing -- and the property welcomed you to walk back in time on soil that has grown grapes for the same family for generations. The swimming pool felt almost extravagant, while at the same time, quiet -- without interrupting the beautiful landscape. Andre greeted us every morning with home baked delights for breakfast and and provided help for a gentle plan for our day (and reservations for fabulous restaurants for the nights). And of course, the wine !!! I think by the time I tasted the port- well, at that moment - we booked an additional night at Casa Amarela! Maybe we will return in the fall to help stomp...
Read moreExcellent service, very comfortable room, amazing breakfast. Staff was absolutely fantastic, showering us with hospitality and warmth. The owners were sick during our visit so we couldn’t do the official tasting but Andre made up for it by making us feel so welcome and at home (and even showed our girls how wine is made). The pool is lovely but on the colder side, really nice views. Ana made delicious breakfast for us every day. The only downside is that they do not have a kitchen for lunch and dinner, so you always have to plan your meals ahead. Would highly recommend this place for a very authentic, comfortable experience. Very very family friendly. The best part is that they only have 5 rooms so it’s super cozy...
