If you're looking for a beautiful tan with amazing views, head to Salgado. Less popular than Nazare (and a bit more difficult to get to), you get away from the crowds to actually enjoy the beach. The water is ALWAYS powerful - I have yet to see it be safe for swimming (generally there is a red flag out so you cannot go swimming - if you do, be warned: local authorities may come and stop you). If you're looking at the water, to the right, there is a "nude" part of the beach (to be honest, this is legal in most beaches in Portugal, but Salgado is one of the ones that is known for having a discrete place). For some reason, I feel like when I go to Salgado, I get more tan than if I go somewhere else (the locals say that the sun is more powerful in Salgado than Nazare, even if they are only a few miles apart). Parking is not easy here; have a car that's able to park in the sand without getting stuck (when I had a rental, I had to have people help me get out since my tire got stuck in the sand!) Don't be fooled, though: although it's less popular than Nazare, this beach can still have a lot of people there. Get there early to grab a nice parking spot ... and then sit back, and enjoy the sun rays...

It’s the kind of place where your dog becomes a poet – ours trotted along like he owned the coastline, tail high, ears flapping in the breeze. Yes, it’s dog friendly, and yes, your dog will thank you in licks.
Swimming? Not really – unless you’re part dolphin. The waves here are wild and proud. But for walking, reflecting, or pretending you’re in a dramatic perfume commercial – it’s perfection. Wide, open, cinematic.
Bonus points: clean restrooms open until 7pm (a rare treasure on beach days). No showers – but who needs them when you’re salty, happy, and maybe just a little windswept?
We’ll be back – same dog, same wind,...
