Castle of Ourem Time spent: 20-25 min Price: 3.19 EUR Path for disabled: not available Car Parking: available Bike parking: not available Ourém Castle is considered one of the most beautiful Portuguese castles and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Its location around a water source and particular characteristics lead us to believe that it has developed since prehistory, successively ruled by the Romans, Visigoths, and Muslims. The last ones built a fortification. The old Muslim fortification was rebuilt in the early days of the monarchy since the first reference to a triangular castle on top of the hill dates back to 1178.

Fantastic place, and spectacular setting. We had a wonderful guided tour with Deolinda and Liliana who both explained the historical connection/context between the " Paços dos Condes de Ourém ( residence) and the castle of Ourém. Well worth a visit, especially for history enthusiasts. The 4th Count of Ourém (Dom Afonso IV) incorporated Venetian style architecture in the Paços and he was the grandson of King João the 1st of Portugal. The nearby church with Dom Afonso's the tomb in the crypt ...the 4th Count of Ourém is also a must to visit as well as the gothic water fountain. See photos .

Gorgeous castle in which you can take a break as there are a few coffee shops there, and sincerely the most beautiful and peaceful fountain I've seen in a castle. Great sight seeing, really good conservation status, and although I only heard the tourist guide a few minutes he seemed very enthusiastic and worth it. I just feel like it's lacking, as many other castles, more information of the story throughout the castle, just enough to make less interested visitors a bit more aware of where they are.

A 12th and 15th century castle at this location. These buildings have a lot of historical significance to Portuguese history. I highly recommend taking the guided tour offered on site. Our tour guide spoke English very well, and gave us great historical details of the importance of this place. Beautiful small medieval town just below the castle. Nice views of surrounding towns.

A nice Castle with a small peacefull medieval village with an amazing view! Worth the detour or the trip! Do not forget to try the famous Ginja, very sweet but very tasty Portuguese Cherry licor! Also, although the wine from this region is not very known outside, it has been known, respected and appreciated by other Portuguese provinces for a long time! Give it a try!
