Stunning private nature reserve operated by the NGO Associação Transumância e Natureza. We were guided by António Monteiro (who was involved with its inception, as an excursion from Casa da Cisterna. His partner Ana Berliner is VP of ATN. They own Casa da Cisterna guest house in nearby Castelo Rodrigo). The reserve showcases the successful potential of rewilding in the Vale do Côa.

António provided an overview of history, geology, avifauna, sociology, and other key dimensions of the reserve. He explained the challenges of the effects of climate change, and the opportunities of partnerships with local landowners and other stakeholders.

For you birders: We saw Eurasian griffons (in abundance), Egyptian vultures, partridges, long-tailed tits, a snake-eagle, Black kites, Eurasian hoopoe, Common cuckoo, Blue Rock-thrushes, Rock Buntings, and much more.

For hikers: the GR45 trail passes through this reserve. The views from the hilltops are amazing. The tranquility of the area is highly appealing.

As an example of the success of rewilding, you can see the distinct flora of the reserve (relative to nearby farmlands). We also saw the garrano horses from a distance.

We highly recommend visiting, and supporting the work of ATN through membership...

We entered the reserve through the South Gate (40.9053625, -7.0962604) where there’s plenty of parking space across the street, and it is also where you can do a short ~45m trail called Trilho dos Biólogos. The trail is well signalled and will take you to the best view point! If you’re lucky you’ll see some wild garrano horses and possibly other animals too like Maronesa cows, vultures etc. Definitely worth a visit, and in my opinion no need...
