🌊 Cascata do Salto do Prego: a Hidden Gem 💎

🌳 Nestled in the heart of a lush forest, Cascata do Salto do Prego is a true hidden gem. The waterfall is a breathtaking sight, with crystal-clear water cascading down a rocky cliff into a serene pool below.

🌺 The surrounding area is just as stunning, with vibrant wildflowers and verdant foliage as far as the eye can see. The sound of the waterfall creates a soothing ambiance that makes it easy to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

🚶‍♀️ The hike to the waterfall is relatively easy, with a well-marked trail that winds through the forest. Along the way, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna, including colorful butterflies and chirping birds.

🏊‍♂️ Once you reach the waterfall, you can take a refreshing dip in the pool below. The water is cool and invigorating, making it the perfect way to relax after the hike.

📸 Cascata do Salto do Prego is a photographer's dream, with countless opportunities for stunning shots. From the lush greenery to the sparkling water, there's no shortage of beauty to capture.

🍦 After a day of exploring, be sure to stop by one of the local cafes or restaurants to refuel. The area is known for its delicious cuisine, which features fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes.

🌃 As the sun sets, the waterfall takes on a magical quality, with the golden light illuminating the cascading water. It's the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

💭 Overall, Cascata do Salto do Prego is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to escape the ordinary and experience the natural beauty of Portugal.

To learn more about the track itself , see the map and understand more details check this link: https://www.packing-up-the-pieces.com/salto-do-prego-sanguinho-hike/ I found this to be a great and challenging track (for me) . The waterfall worth the hike and worth a dive in . It’s a 4.5 km loop (2.8m) to the first waterfall and you can add to it by going to another waterfall (adding 4.4km/2.75m ) and took us about 3 hours including a swim in the waterfall

You can park in Faial da Terra village. Note: don’t drive till the trail begins as Google maps show you as there is no parking there. Best to park in the village and please make sure not to block sidewalks and/or houses entrance. It’s a small village and visitors tend to forget that people actually live here

As for the walk itself, we opted to climb along side the stream which then turns into a dirt path and after visiting the waterfall, go back via Sanguinho village That said , if you have bad knees , going down via Sanguinho village can be most challenging and you might prefer climbing it

The trail can be muddy so bring solid shoes . Again, if you have knee issues or trouble walking bring...

Cascata do Salto do Prego is one of the highlights to visit on the island. A wonderful waterfall and a beautiful, comfortable hike to it.

We parked at Trilho do Sanguinho. There is small parking lot and some street parking here. The waterfall is well signed post and the trail well marked. The hike is somewhat strenuous but very manageable if in good health and mobility. Keep an eye and ear out for the wild chicken. Very fun to come across chickens on the trail!

Once at the waterfall, take it all in. You can swim in the water around it. Mostly pebbles and some sand. Can do it barefoot.

On the way back, we went via the abandoned village of Sanguinho. Great hike back, with a bar to stop at (in the abandoned village) for refreshments and to take in the views!

Round trip can easily be done in a couple hours. Well worth it and highly...

This is the easiest point of parking/access for Prego do Salto. The parking lot is at the end of a village road from Faial da Terra and parks about 6 cars. The trail in total is 2 km. First third is uneventful and along the stream. Once you cross the wood bridge, you have hit the second third and it's switchbacks until you have about 600 m to go. The path evens out a bit but then you descend pretty steeply the last 200 m to reach the waterfall. Yes there are steep sections but they are short and interspersed. We did it while it was misting and did not find the path difficult or too slippery (with proper hiking shoes). 50 min in, 40 min out at a 6+ mo pregnant lady pace. The hike is rather protected so I'd say it's a great thing to do on an overcast/misting day!
