BEWARE OF IMPORT CHARGES ON SHIPPING. I'll start by saying that I had a lovely visit to Caves Santa Marta itself - lunch was nice and there were bottomless wine refills! The port tasting was also very good, and there was a very engaging guide. My main grief was with ordering bottles of port to be shipped back to the UK. While I was told there would be shipping charges, import charges were not mentioned by the guide. This should be mentioned upfront and should be very clear. For context, I ordered three bottles of port to be shipped to the UK, with shipping costing around £40, but lo and behold, the import charge is over £46. I realise Brexit impacts things, but it is really important that the salesperson at the winery makes it REALLY clear that big charges could be involved (the fact that this cost more than the shipping itself is pretty crazy!) As a recommendation for the manager (who has luckily responded), a table should be drawn up with a rough indication of import charges for different regions. As Caves Santa Marta, são a maior estrutura cooperativa do Douro, criada na região vitivinícola demarcada e regulamentada mais antiga do mundo. As terras de Penaguião foram um dos primeiros concelhos a pertencer à primeira demarcação pombalina em 1756, destinadas à produção dos bons vinhos de “Feitoria”.

Dois séculos depois, um grupo de viticultores quis mudar a realidade da viticultura regional, convictos que o cooperativismo seria a melhor maneira de promover o principal produto das suas atividades.

Assim nasceu, em 1959, a Adega Cooperativa de Santa Marta, incluindo as vinhas das antigas terras de Penaguião e outras importantes adegas vizinhas, da Cumieira e Medrões. Hoje, reúne mais de 1850 sócios e produz 10% de todo o vinho da Região Demarcada do Douro, 13 milhões de litros, divididos entre as categorias de Vinho do Porto e do Douro, bem como outras variedades de vinhos espumantes e aguardentes.

Em 1998 foi a primeira cooperativa a obter um Porto Vintage, e iniciou o século XXI sendo considerada a melhor adega cooperativa de Portugal. Hoje, as Caves Santa Marta são uma empresa com comércio internacional, exportando para dezoito mercados em todo o mundo.

Ainda em 24 de março de 1947, a Federação de Viticultores da Região do Douro anunciou a construção de um armazém em Santa Marta de Penaguião. Assim se criou o Armazém 22, formado por dois singulares edifícios. No primeiro, foram instaladas as cubas vidradas, com capacidade de dois milhões e meio de litros. O segundo ficou para a casa do encarregado, a adega com as cubas, o armazenamento de garrafas de vinho e uma grande destilaria, para queimar os excedentes dos vinhos da região do Douro.

As Caves Santa Marta dispõem actualmente de excelentes instalações no antigo Armazém 0022, que pertenceram à Casa do Douro, para proporcionar uma visita guiada às antigas Destilarias e às Caves de Vinho do Porto.

We went with a guided tour to CSM vinyard and were welcomed by Luis a very nice and entertaining local guide, wo introduced us to the making of the local Port & Douro Wines. He explained easy understandeble the process of Port production and the highlight was the option to be pushed inside the concrete tanks to imagine how people get in there to clean these tanks after use. We enjoyed a delicious 3 course lunch after the very good tasting procedure. Impressive how the Port is kept in this old huge barrels. Our favourite was the 10 year old Tawny!
