Castelo de Alcanede Type: castle Price: free WC: not available Path for disabled: not available Bike/Car parking: not available One of the least visited castles in Portugal. (!)Going up to the tower may be complicated, as the space is extremely narrow. In 49 B.C. the local castro was conquered by Romans. Since that time it was used as a military position, regularly taken by different forces. In the 12th century the castle (built by Moors) was conquered by Afonso Henriques. It was ruined by war, so then it was rebuilt and the new elements were added. In the 16th century it was ruined by the earthquake, but its military importance was lost, so it was fully reconstructed just in the 20th century.

Fonte: allaboutportugal.pt

Well worth the visit to this castle. Just a shame the castle is no longer maintained. Also there is little information about it's history.

Cool little castle in this old town. It’s usually open and no cost to enter. Somewhat run down and beat up by local teens. I still recommend this if you are in the are. Very cool place. Can see the castle in...
